As you can see, the unique title I chose for this theory is My Story, My Response. I chose this title because everyone has a story. None of us knows what makes a person respond in the manner they do. Our expectations of how we desire to be treated are all different because of that life story. Burgoon states that everyone has a preference to their own personal space and the distance that they prefer to be to someone else in various situations. Personal space is an “invisible” line between one individual to another. This space is not determined by our age or height, but by our individual relationship and connection to another person. The laws within our culture and how we were raised determines our personal space to others and the meaning of that personal space. We all behave within a set of standards and rules. Sooner or later each one of us may find ourselves in a situation where we have to deviate from what we learned, our set of principles and rules. (Griffin, Ledbetter, and Sparks, 2015, p. 82) The study of personal space was first introduced by Edward Hall from Illinois. Hall studied anthropology and became interested in how people use their own space in relationship to others. He used the term proxemics to first describe this personal space. Hall believed Americans have four proxemics and he defines each one as a zone and a type of relational space.
