Naked Sedaris Analysis

Improved Essays
The similarities between Sedaris and I are vague. We do strange things and respect our grandmother. In the book, “Naked” Sedaris does strange things like licking the light switch. “There you are with your tongue pressed against that light switch” (7). He also counts different things that he does. “If I were to lose count of my steps, I’d have to return to the school and begin again” (8). He overthinks everything. I compared myself to Sedaris because, I get distracted easily. I think that is the problem with Sedaris. School has always been a problem in my life but that was something I had to do growing up. I wouldn’t say that I did not like school but it was always a focus thing. Everything around me distracted me even the teachers walking around during a test. I …show more content…
In middle school, my aunt was a librarian so whenever I would be get off track I was sent to the library or even just go there on my own to refocus. My aunt was influential as I was growing up in school and out of school. She always had some encouraging things to say to get me refocused or even just a snack would help. Almost like Sedaris’ grandmother instead of a dollar she would give me food. Sedaris says, “Ya Ya was always good for a dollar or two”. I have also been influential to myself because I am older now and I am going to school for something that I want to do and I must stay focused to get where I want to be. As I have gotten older I started to focus more. Not only just for school but for what I wanted to do. I focused more on me and my distractions have become harder to please. My mother was a good influential person as well in my life. She kept me on track with everything. She was better than Sedaris’ mother. His mother

After analyzing “Me Talk Pretty One Day.”, my opinion on Sedaris’s goal has changed slightly. I believe he is focusing more on showing that, even under adverse conditions you can always accomplish what you’ve set out to do. In the first few paragraphs, he not only lays out his purpose of moving to France to learn the language but also how nervous he is to be back in school. Sedaris then touches on the teacher’s attitude towards him and the class. He is constantly setting the mood of the article as stressed, whether it be from the teacher's attitude or the foreign country he is in, but goes on to show that even under all these circumstances he succeeded in achieving the goal of learning French.…

By looking at the quotation by Richard Rodriguez, “Working class students must separate themselves from their family and their family’s values in order to succeed academically,” I will argue that students should not have to separate themselves from their love ones in order to be successful academically. There are many examples in the text that significe how parents and other love ones could motivate a student academically. In his writings, Achievement of Desire by Richard Rodriguez, Richard demonstrates how his parents and siblings played a key role of his success. His “brother and both sister were both very good students.…

I want to start off by saying David Sedaris is a great writer and I love his story of “Picka Pocketoni”. His character as a person is amazing, he is funny and very descriptive in what he talks about. So not only am I getting a good laugh out of the story “Picka Pocketoni” but I’m also getting a clear image of what is going on throughout the story. In this description David is being insulted by a group of young teenagers that is criticizing where he lives, France, and is also being insulted by an American couple named Carol and Martin, who thinks David is French but in actuality is just as American as them. The setting of the story is on the Metro of France, which is impressive to me because usually a story is set in a place like a different…

In David Sedaris essay, “Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa” he speaks of his and his partner’s childhood life. His writing is effective and meaning full especially when he speaks of his partners fifth grade trip to the slaughter house, the afternoon after seeing the moving about the talking car, and also the importance of their family. Sedaris seem to be envious of his partner’s life as a child though, he makes it clear that he is half way joking, letting readers know this right from the start. When he speaks of trip to the slaughter house he also remarks “Were there no autopsies scheduled at the local morgue?’ showing that he thought it was comical and strange.…

In the essay “Undecided” by David Sedaris, the author speaks about our voting system through ridicule of “undecided” voters. First, we have to take in consideration that David Sedaris wrote the essay in the wake of 2008 presidential election, when two candidates had completely different views on the main issues, such as: economy, taxes, the war in Iraq, and immigration. The narrator makes it evident with his comparison of airplane food choices, as he says “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”…
