The Native American Health and Medicine talk was very interesting talk given by David G. Hilmey from St. Bonaventure University. He focused on Ethnoscience, which looks at the indigenous knowledge systems to connect culture with science. He is a synthetic organic chemist. He focused on The Seneca tribe, which is about 8,000 citizens. In particular, the Faithkeepers School.…
There has been positive transformations in the Roman Catholic and Native American traditions. There were struggles that took place in both religious groups before these transitions occurred. Pluralism and ethnicity are two of the most important episodes in the Roman Catholic faith. Ghost Dance and inculturation have contributed significantly to Native American tradition. Each of these changes in both religions have created a more diverse congregation, unity, and collaboration of different cultures coming together as one union.…
Comparison Essay 2 Native American art in their cultures differ from one to the next, so let’s start with what makes them alike. Mesoamerica, South America and North America all have similar aspects in their art. They all use earthy colors such as brown, gray and red-brown that is because these cultures had alike ground materials like clay. All three also had pieces of art that were used in ceremonies such as the Burial Mask, from Point Hope, Alaska.…

Religious Experience of Native Americans The Native American religious experience from before the European presence to the 20th century underwent many transformations throughout its evolution. In the beginning, the Olmec and Mayan hierarchical civilizations believed their kings, who were also their religious leaders, were able to communicate with the Gods and ancestors. This demonstrated how the early Native Americans believed that supernatural forces existed. This belief in the supernatural led to the Native Americans developing a cultural relationship between themselves and nature, with the intent to maintain a harmonic balance between the spiritual and living world (Unit 1, Lecture 1).…
There are many conflicting ideas surrounding pharmaceutical companies going into developing countries to collect samples of native plants. This opens the door for many companies, allowing them to create and patent new medicines from the samples and traditional knowledge. Under the patent law, these companies do not need to share revenues from drugs developed in part from the exploitation of traditional knowledge. Allergan operates on such terms. However, recently it has transferred its most valuable patent back to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe.…
The Native Americans were changed from a thriving population to a people on the verge of extinction because of the federal government’s determination to push west. Before Columbus reached America the Natives were prosperous. When the US pushed west, it caused the deaths of many Native people. Now, the Native Americans are a fraction of what they once were. The near-destruction of many Native American civilizations was caused by the US federal government.…
Native American culture has been slowly dying for a little over five centuries. It started in 1492 when Columbus sailed out on his historic voyage and it is still going on in present day America. Interactions between Native Americans and European settlers often resulted in the complete destruction of music considered “pagan” by the Europeans. Native people were continuously removed and relocated from their ancestral homelands, losing many of their mythologies and ancient music traditions in the process. The Native American people have tried to fight back numerous times but there numbers were decimated in the beginning with the introduction of diseases such as measles, typhus, and smallpox.…
With changes to their way of life at the hand of Euro-Americans, Native Americans experienced dramatic shifts in the culture. Evans-Campbell (2008) explains that within the family unit, historical trauma easily becomes a component within the structure that lays the foundation for interactions within that organization. Poupart (2003) explains that through changing culture, the roles individuals play have also changed. For instance, historically Native American communities were often matrilineal in contrast to patrilineal arrangements in Euro-American culture. Furthermore, Native American males and females experienced more equality than Euro-American males and females experienced.…
The relationship between the government and the Native American population has experienced problems since America was first settled. There has been a long history of destructive federal policies and actions that have hurt Native communities, increased inequality, and accelerated the loss of tribal cultural traditions (Karaim). The United States has promised Native American tribes the right to self-government and to exist as distinct peoples; the government is also supposed to provide adequate resources to aid the needs of Native citizens and strengthen the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations (Keel). The relationship has experienced troubles, especially in educating young Native Americans. The Native American education system is failing to…
Through the progression of this course, various aspects of history were viewed, in addition to concepts that are still associated to the lives of Aboriginal peoples today. While carrying some previous, biased knowledge on the topics discussed, First Nations Studies allowed the development of many ideas as well as the differing perspectives on each. Via the use of assorted reading selections, tutorial discussions, guest speakers, lectures, and a variety of other forms, I was able to take away a unique understanding, different to the one I had prior, which in turn educated me on Indigenous communities. This course attempted to bypass the anger that has been accumulated over the years, and portray information in order to avoid further issues…
In America, we have freedom of religion and every religion is accepted, but that was not always the case when the Puritans tried to force their religion on the Indians. Religion is a touchy topic in our society today, but not as much as it was when the Puritans first came to the New World and tried to force the natives to their religion. This created a conflict that got so heated it was a cause of war. This conflict makes us wonder, who started the fighting? Did the natives do something to the puritans or did the puritans do something to the natives?…

Social Structure: The major components of social structure are culture, social class, social status, roles, groups and social institutions. Use each of these social structure variables to explain why Native Americans have such a low rate of college graduation. (See Table 9.3 on page 234 in your Henslin textbook). Minority groups must endure a great deal of inequality to gain success in the United States.…
