From the time America gained its independance all through the 20th century, Americans only cared about expanding their territory, forcibly taking away land from groups they oppressed. Families of natives that had been thriving in one location from generation to generation would be weary seeing a bunch of new people wander to their land. It would take time, but the families would become trusting and accepting towards the strangers. Sadly, white settlers only wanted land, so they used the kindness and innocence of the Native Americans to their advantage. Initially, settlers acted kind, bringing gifts and trading goods. The removal act caused tensions between settlers and Native Americans to increase 10 fold. It was hard for the Native American’s to fight back against such a powerful army who had better guns, and transportation than the Native American’s did. (history.com) Disease, malnutrition, and warfare combined with the poor lands set aside as reservations decreased the Native American population drastically. The Native Americans would use muskets that they would buy from traders or bow and arrow’s fashioned from trees and twine. Unfortunately they were outnumbered and inexperienced with gun’s giving the US settlers an advantage. Native Americans were forced to adopt the westernized culture and to forget about their culture. Native Tribes fought as hard as they could. The Native Americans had no choice but to fight back they had to fight for the land that was being taken from them, even though they were outnumbered and not advanced enough. Their population numbers decreased drastically due to war and also due to new diseases brought in from settlers. After the wars the Native American’s were forced to forget their culture, and dress as westerners would, and attended westernized schools. They were forced to walk a trail facing west, away from society. They were put on reservations and treated like outcasts.
