Poverty is a big challenge especially in the developing and under-developed nations. It is important to emphasize the role poverty plays in hunger as well as it impact on the health care and under-nutrition during pregnancy especially amongst risk families.

Poverty has been defined as an unpleasant feeling that emanates as a result of lack of food. To be hungry is a natural but when the access to food is unavailable then it becomes a challenge. Generally, the leading cause of immunodeficiency globally in pregnant women and infants is malnutrition. When pregnant woman are nutrient deficient, it poses a threat to both the mother and the baby and they could be at a higher risk of serious health issues. The health status has a significant impact on the quality of life. One of the main reason why the risk families suffer from different ailment is their inability get the adequate healthcare. Nigeria is a developing where there is a huge disparity between the government hospitals and the privately-owned hospitals. Most of the private hospitals are well equipped and are set up in a way that only the high and medium income earner can afford it. On the other hand, the government hospitals are usually crowded and not as highly equipped as the private hospitals. In other countries the risk families have little or no social protection and hence suffer more illness than the high income
