Personal Narrative: My Growing Up In Newark, New Jersey

Improved Essays
Even though Newark has a bad name with negative stereotypes it’s my home. In Newark, New Jersey I was born, went to school, made friends, and learned a lot. I was born to huge family where I grew up in the known most dangerous town in Newark, New Community. This same town is where my family grew up as well. The neighborhood was so bad my mother never allowed me to play outside. Luckily I had sisters and cousins to play with. Fortunately I’m a two way stream kind of person, so I saw the good out of it. I learned from it and made the best out of it. Growing up in Newark you see alot and depending on what you want out of life you learned to be better. Luckily for me, I have a family that saw what I saw, but worse which taught me even more. I …show more content…
I went to a brand new high school where my class was the first graduating class. The school was very close knit and small. We shared a building with two other high schools, then by our second year we only shared it with one other school. People’s Prep, my high school, is a college readiness school so we did a lot of prep classes and their mission was to get us to and through the college of our choice. And it worked. There I was able to be myself and open up. While there I gained high honor roll and gold attendance from almost every quarter of the entire four years there. I was rewarded for student intern being the first intern there and opening doors for other students. Also i created GSA Club (Gay Straight Alliance). I created this group so that students of the LGBTQ community would be more comfortable in the school. The school itself was a safe place for me, but the best part about the group was being around people you can relate too. Throughout my high school career with these accomplishments i was able to think ahead about where I was going and what I wanted to …show more content…
I always wanted to go to Rutgers so it has always been in my head. Here at I Rutgers I plan to get my degree in psychology and my teaching certificate. In order to do that I must stay focused as well as enjoy my college experience here and be involved. With that I should be able to teach a class of high school students about the world we live in with depth of real history with Afrikana curriculum. While teaching I want to continue furthering my education and going back to school. I personally feel like there is no such thing as being finished with school unless school just isn’t for you. But for me, in quoting Albert Einstein, “ Education is not learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” Meaning education to me is more than “knowing” something but being able to think and speaking about it by, in some way, connecting what you learn for yourself and the things around you. So with my hopes and dreams I plan to embed the importance of knowledge and educating yourself as well as being educated in the heads of young people and helping them find their path to success like myself which will gradually help the world we live

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Growing up in Skokie, Illinois and going to arguably one of the most diverse high schools in the nation, Niles West, I have grown up with people of all different backgrounds and cultures. I was not even aware of our school’s diversity until I visited my cousin’s graduation ceremony in Geneva, Illinois. According to illinois-demographics.com, Geneva has a 90.9% white population. In contrast to this, Skokie has a 65.6% white population. He seemed to be the only Asian-American that I saw that day, and really stuck out.…

New York otherwise known as the “Big Apple” is home to approximately 19.7 million people. In a closer lense, New York City is home to 8.4 million people. Everytime I go to New York I always spot the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center. For seven summers I went to Camp Matoaka in Maine, each year I would return to the same smiling faces. These familiar faces were always close to my heart, however they were not always in reach.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

I live in the “ghetto,” or at least that’s the notion I received when I first moved into my neighborhood. The houses are old and it’s never quiet, I sleep with my sister in a small bedroom, getting up early every morning and seeing the drunken people from last night’s parties. The challenges I faced on a daily bases was the low income me and my family had to survive on. My parents worked day and night just to get food on the table and pay the bills.
