New York city
The city that I decided to write about for this assignment is New York City. The reason that I decided to choose this city was because of the interesting historic events that have happened in the city of New York and how it has come to one of the most thriving cities that is also the culture capital of the United States. New york officially did not get its name until the 18th century when the British seized New Amsterdam from the dutch giving it a new name: New York City. For the next century, New York's population started to increase allowing immigrants from Germany, Netherlands, and France. The city played an important role in transporting goods through …show more content…
That is because of most of the buildings lie near the coastal edge are in potential danger to a storm such as Hurricane Sandy that happened in the year 2012. Sea level rise is not the only thing they have to worry about, the effects that come along with climate change can go as far as hurricanes and typhoons, wildfires, floods, droughts, and earthquakes. By 2050, global warming-related sea level rise is expected to flood the coast and airports which will make shut down transportation. The city’s major airports sit along the ocean and face similar sea level rise risks. It is not just the airports that are at risk, as for many people that ride the subways, trains, taxi’s, buses are all vulnerable due to sea level rise and storm surges. Forty to fifty percent of new york's population are vulnerable due to disabilities, old age, and or sickness. New york needs to gauge their plans based on the vulnerable …show more content…
If that was to be successful then there would still be communication amongst rescuers and people who are left stranded. Another way would be to have clear authority and have a responsible rescue team if an emergency were to happen. This makes it so there is clear communication and there is less room for a mistake to happen. Lastly New York should improve the buildings and zoning codes to reduce structural vulnerability to storm surges. NYBC is working on these codes so that it can enhance building resiliency by strengthening infrastructure and establishing emergency preparation. The NYBC, American Institute of Architects new york chapter, and the building resiliency task force are all offering different approaches and ideas to rearrange new yorks disaster readiness. Their reports mainly focus on improving infrastructure, residential and commercial buildings, environmental issues, and critical buildings. They are all conjoined by one common theme: To improve resiliency. Understanding this is a critical concept to protect new york and the citizens that live there from the future powerful
