“Communication is the most critical leadership skill due to the fact that it impacts all management activities and phases of the management process” (Marquis & Huston, 2015, p.437). We utilize various types of communications in the line of our nursing profession in dealing with people of diverse backgrounds, and we want to be clear in giving instructions to prevent confusion and misunderstanding, in order to be productive. Actively listening to your employees’ concerns and issues make you a reasonable leader in making decisions that involved them, and in achieving the common goals that your department desires to implement and improve. “Leading by example is a central premise of most popular leadership philosophies and formal theories” (Simmons, 2011, para. 1). Therefore, if you want your employees to follow you, be a good role model such as being responsible, practicing what you preached, and not merely doing a lip service. It is typical in a leadership position, that some employees will disagree with your opinion and how you handle a situation. Hader (2006) noted, “not to confuse criticism with a personal insult, rather used it as a means to prepare yourself for imminent challenging situations” …show more content…
Within the organization, I can observe and communicate with these leaders and inquire about their approaches to managing their employees and running their departments efficiently. Attending in-services on building leadership skills will also improve my leadership style. In addition, leadership style changes and developed as you grow in your leadership position by learning from previous leader-managers you have encountered and apply which approaches to use in certain situations, since “there is no single leadership strategy that is effective in each situation” (Marquis & Huston, 2015, p. 42). Furthermore, I want to take the advised of Hader (2006),” that a leader should be mindful of her organization’s culture, consider the needs of those she leads, understands her own strengths and limits, and a clear expectation of the established goals”
