The failure or success of a healthcare organization can be measured by the effective TM implementation and exercising control in wasting time related to all activities in the organization. Head nurses who work in the outpatient department spend time receiving visitors, communicating with junior nurses, accompanying relatives and family to physicians, causing in time wastage and very poor TM. Hence TM skills are essential skills for NLs to help them excel in jobs and maintain a good work-life balance, and improve their performance with increased productivity.

Some experts believe that people, on the average, waste 2 to 3 hours per day as a result of ineffective use of time. A time log will help a person to be aware of this wasted time, to determine how effectively time is used, and to assess other factors of TM. Generally a log is kept for a typical week. However the NL may decide to keep a log for a longer period of time. (McEachen, 2007)
Major Time Wasters:
These are telephone interruptions; drop-in visitors, meetings (scheduled and unscheduled), rises; lack of objectives, priorities, and deadlines; cluttered desks and personal disorganization; ineffective delegation and involvement in routine and detail; attempting too much at once and estimating time unrealistically; lack of, or, unclear communication or instruction; inadequate, inaccurate, or delayed information; indecision and procrastination; confused responsibility and authority; inability to say no; leaving tasks unfinished and lack of self discipline. (Worth, 2003)
