Any behavior whether it be speaking, walking or eating is learned through the three key mechanisms of modelling (watching others), reinforcement (any source of reward) and association (being linked with internal factors such as mood or external factors in our environment). Association: this aspect believes that all behaviors can be associated with internal factor and external aspects. Changing behavior therefore involves making new associations so that the newer healthier behavior becomes more positive and the older unhealthier behavior becomes more negative (Ogden.J, 2017)
Examine Obesity with the Learning theory. Modelling for obesity may done by going to the GYM, Many people are already going to the gym to lose weight, or one may choose to go with friend, By doing this, we are surrounding ourselves with people with the desired behavior thus learning by watching other.
Reinforcement for the obese person from friend and family member who see a difference in the physical appearance, or in the form of self-reward. Reinforcement makes a significant amount of difference, I knew a girl who was having difficulty controlling her weight. Her mother, to get her to exercise would criticize her. Although her mother only did this for girl to lose weight, it only made it worse until she came to the point and ignored the matter completely thinking it had gone too
