Sexual objectification occurs when a person is seen as an object instead of a human being; it is a problem that primarily affects women in general. The media has been responsible for transmitting these highly sexual images of women with the objective of selling a product. It is so mainstream that many people are not aware of it happening, but their subconscious can pick up these subtle messages that women are less and only used to satisfy men. These actions have brought many consequences towards women; it has perpetuated rape culture, it affects women's body image, and causes mental health disorders. The objectification of women's bodies is an important factor towards rape culture. Chances are, you have heard of or know someone who has been a victim of rape. There was a case in August of 2012 in which a teenage girl, from Steubenville, Ohio, was gang raped by two high school football players. Many members of the community blamed the girls actions, which, in their eyes, led to her rape. Moreover, the reactions of some news stations were appalling, since they were sympathizing with the rapists instead of the victim. Images of women in magazines are altered to represent an impossible perfect body. I believe the media is hurting the appearance on how females think they should look and is causing a new type of stereotypical sexism in women.
