Obstetric Observation Paper

During my rotation at obstetrics, I observed Laura, who is an RN. Laura went to school at DCCC where she received her associate RN degree. When becoming an RN, you can graduate from a two year or four year program. Laura has been working in obstetrics for five and a half years. While observing, I saw three different babies in the nursery. The first baby I observed, was the baby Laura was mainly taking care of. The baby was born at 6:20 a.m. on November 20, and was four weeks early. Laura was monitoring the baby closely since the baby was born premature. The baby had a hard time breathing by herself, but other than that, the baby was healthy. The respirations of the baby were loud and you were able to hear them outside if the nursery. Laura said that the baby’s oxygen level was still around 100 and she was not going to give the baby oxygen yet. The second baby was born four weeks ago and was still in the nursery because she was having drug withdrawals. The nurses were hoping that the second baby was going to go home today. I did not get to know much about the third baby because she was asleep the whole time I was there. The way the nurses talked about the third baby, made me believe that she was healthy. During my day in obstetrics, not much was going on, but it was still interesting. I enjoyed learning about infants and obstetrics …show more content…
I saw mobility in both of the rotations I went to this week. In the OB I saw how babies were able to move freely in their crib. Babies were restricted to their crib, because they cannot do anything on their own yet, but were able to move freely within their crib. In radiology, I saw restricted mobility. During an MRI a patient is restricted from movement, because the pictures will turn out blurry if a patient is moving. During any radiology procedure, a patient has restricted mobility. Overall, my two days in clinicals this week were interesting and I learned a lot. It was a great two days of

Throughout the entire semester, I incorporated evidence based practice into my clinical days. Whether if I was performing a skill or if I was observing my nurse do a skill, I was thinking is this evidence based. I observed nurses use water instead of alcohol to clean an area on the skin before pricking a patient’s finger for a blood glucose check; this I knew was evidenced based. Some none evidence based thing that I observed were using 5/8inch needles when the nurse should have been using a 1inch length or not using two hands when assessing a patient’s fundus. I met my midterm goal of telling the nurse nicely that this is not what we learned in school.…

Yesterday in clinical I was on the labor and delivery unit. As everyone know, mom and baby is not my preference. For me, the problem is not caring for mom or even seeing a delivery, it is caring for the tiny baby. I wanted to be on the labor and delivery side because I hoped to see a delivery. There was one delivery on the unit, but unfortunately the mom was not receptive to having a student in the room.…

Raised in the atmosphere of love, acceptance, and gender equality Selena struggles to comprehend the magnitude of the misery and despair that of women across all socio-economic levels had to endure on a daily basis. From the beginning, newborn girls had a substantial disadvantage compared to their male counterparts risking of being abandoned based on the gender discrimination (251). As I completed my observation, I observed all five developmental domains which include physical, emotional and social, cognitive, adaptive, and language and communication.…
