Promoting a balance between types of occupations will increase health and well-being (Arcand-Dusseault & Egan, 2015; Clarke, 2003). I believe that productivity is very important. If I am not being productive during the day, I do not feel like I am fulfilling my purpose as an individual. This feeling may relate back to my childhood, because it was not often that I got to sleep in or have a day off around the house. My family does home improvement projects almost every weekend, either on our own house or on someone else’s house in the neighborhood. I believe productivity is important, but I also believe that taking care of yourself and not getting over stressed or over worked is also vital to one’s health and well-being. If I do not take care of myself or take time to relax, I will be exhausted and my productivity will decrease. I have had medical problems with my ears my whole life. A few years ago I almost ended up in the hospital because I had an ear infection that was inhibiting my daily functioning. I was pushing myself hard to keep practicing for the upcoming basketball game. By the time the game came around, I was too sick to play, so if I would have taken time to take care of myself first, I may have been able to be productive when it was game time. I believe that physical, social, and cultural environments are closely connected in my environments, especially in my small hometown. Everyone has a similar value system in Mitchell, Nebraska, which usually consists of working hard, doing the job right, putting others before yourself, and volunteering for community events. I have adopted these beliefs, so I know that environments can impact a person and their choices about how to behave. This may also be the reason that I chose to go into the health field, which would indicate that environments also affect ones occupations. Institutional environment is another environment that is important to me. My great grandfather was a lawyer, so I grew up in a family that obeyed laws and paid attention to politics. I believe this impacted me because I am a firm believer that one should feel obligated to follow laws. I saw many students in high school ruin their future plans, because they got caught doing illegal things. My focus in high school was on making it to college to achieve my dream of becoming an occupational therapist. I believe that I was so focused because all these environments influenced who I was as a person and what I pursued in
