Once More To The Lake Analysis

Improved Essays
As children, people partake in some of their favorite experiences. Many of those people as adults would love to go back to the places where their experiences happened. With time, their children can have the same experiences as their parents; however, the children’s experiences will differ because of conditions around them. In the short story, “Once More to the Lake”, a father compares his trips to the lake as a child to the trip he took with his own son. The son in “Once More to the Lake” has the same basic experiences as his father but with a twist. When the father was younger, he and his family started their vacation at the lake at the start of August, just like the father and son now. The father also went into a small diner and shop when

Relating John Wade and Historical Vietnam in Tim O’Brien’s In the Lake of the Woods Looking at the themes in the Vietnam war through Tim O’Brien’s In the Lake of the Woods show the atrocities committed by American troops through a new light, almost more sympathetic, but with a very harsh connotation. The usage of evidence chapters in the novel pushes the story forward by using real world history combined with the interviews with “people” who knew John Wade and were connected to him. Looking at these it can be inferred that O’Brien is trying to describe the horrors that he saw in both the My Lai area and Vietnam in his tour of duty there.…

In “Once More to the Lake,” by E.B. White, the author vividly describes his favorite childhood vacation experiences as he takes his son to visit the location. The destination is a lake surrounded by a few cottages and offers memorable summer getaways for its visitors. White describes the lake in immense detail recounting the sound of the breeze and storms, the scent of the lakewater, and the feel of the cool water (White, 1941). Such detail makes White’s memories of the lake come alive for me and transports my senses to the scene.…

At the lake, Papa would back the boat down the ramp and we would both hop out of the truck. I'd jump onto the boat and Papa would release a safety strap then back up the boat until it just floated off the trailer. He'd nod when it was safe for me to start the engine then he'd park on the dirt next to the ramp. I was proud that I knew how to drive the boat even though it was just to the dock. He'd hop in, sit at the steering wheel, and we'd be on our way.…

We have examined many wonderful stories throughout the course of this year, but my favorite from this year was Once More to the Lake by E.B. White. Magnificently, it encompasses the story of a father sharing one of his greatest childhood memories with his son. As a boy, the father had ventured with his family to the state of Maine, where they spent the month of August living next to a lake. Although there were a couple incidents on his original trip, the father had always been drawn to the peacefulness of the lake and the fantastic memories which were linked to the place. However, the story focused more exclusively on the realization of the father, where he pictured himself as his father and his son as him.…

Once more to the Lake, by E.B. white, is a personal narrative that allows the readers to slip into the shoes of E.B. White and relive the memories he had with a lake in Maine. This personal narrative theme is more illusive, going back in time where E.B. White lived in delight as a kid who visited a same lake each summer. E.B White reflects his childhood memories when he took his son to the same lake that he grew to love. These reflections and memories are both pleasurable and saddening as he realizes nothing has changed. E.B. White uses figurative language that allows him to express his feelings as he relives the memories he once had as a child.…

Throughout the novel, the reader is given the chance to analyze the different perspective of social audiences on how Eric McGinnis died. We see the views of the citizens of both sides of the river, formal and informal audiences. The river, which splits the two cities, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, symbolizes for the union that is forced upon two cities, regardless of the different social status, race, and poverty they may have.…

I awoke on the couch the morning at the lake with a cool breeze coming through the house. The fire place has just about burned out with only a small bed of hot coals remaining from a fire the night before. I watched as they flickered and crackled slowly changing color as they begin to change to ash. Above the fire place is a trophy deer mounted with an old hunting rifle right below it. It was a beautiful head piece which had ten points in total five on each side making it almost a perfect rack.…

Along with material culture, there was an abundance of speech acts throughout my Thanksgiving ritual. I noticed much talk about college and older family members giving college student family members advice about their career decisions. Thus, we participate in the “career advice ritual.” These statements include, “Make sure you attend class and get to know your professors” or “I hope you are participating in extra activities outside of class” or “Make sure that you can get a job out of college with your major choice” or “Do you have a part time job now? If not, get one.”…
