“Revielle sounded as always at 5am” Ivan Denisovich Shukov was sentenced to a Soviet labour gulag camp after being accused of treason, after being captured by the Germans during World War Two. Ivan’s day in the labour camp begins when he wakes sick in the morning. He sent and forced to clean the guardhouse as a punishment for waking up late. If the temperature is below 40 degrees, the men do not have to go outside and work, but it is only 16 below. The beginning of the novel firmly tries to describe the setting and life inside the prison. Ivan continues to feel ill throughout the day, this begins to become a central theme throughout the novel. Ivan’s mental health also begins to affect him. After breakfast Ivan’s temperature reveals that he is not sick enough to be admitted to the hospital. While in prison Ivan loses his identity and his given an identity badge and receives an identity card
