He laughs in an untamed manner, showing his freewill and openness. He doesn’t care what the rule is or who the authority is. He just wants to smile, play and talk, how he likes and when he likes. McMurphy is a character who cannot be bound. The movie has shown McMurphy not as a rebel but as different. Different in a sense that he represents a change, a change for happiness and freedom. The movie wants to convey the message that different doesn’t mean dangerous. We can be different in our own manner. Maybe people might not like it but happiness is what matters. It does not matter what people think.
There is a character in the movie the chief who also narrates the movie. He acts like deaf and dumb to stay aloof from the society. I think he is wise man. He is influenced by McMurphy and dreams of freedom. At the end Randal McMurphy is lobotomized but his dream of change and freedom doesn’t die with him. The chief makes his dream come true. Society has always been harsh to change. And many people who have tried to bring change have sacrificed their life but their dreams always pass on. Physical restrain is possible but nobody can conceal the thoughts we have spread. We might not live to see but that change
