The beginning It all started when the Romans overthrew the Etruscan conquistadors in 509 B.C.E. The Etruscans had controlled Romans for hundreds of years. Once free the Romans made a republic, a government, where the citizens elected representatives to debate on their behalf. Citizen After the Romans broke free of the Etruscans, then made a republic and all men over 15 who were from the original tribes of Rome became citizens. Citizens of Rome perceived themselves from slaves and non-citizens by wearing a toga; most wore a white toga. During the empire, it was common for the emperor to wear a purple toga to identify himself as the first citizen.…
The statue of King Menkaura (Mycerinus) and Queen (fig. 1) is not only a work of artistic mastery, but also contains a very deep background and history behind the statue itself as well as its discovery and placement into the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). In the early to mid 1900’s, an archaeologist by the name of George Andrew Reisner directed an expedition sponsored by Harvard University and the MFA in the Old Kingdom site of Giza. It is thanks to his scrupulous documentation through early photography and detailed notes while excavating the Menkaura pyramid complex that we have not only original objects, but an archive of information regarding these objects. The statue was revealed in a robbers’ pit at the Menkaura Valley Temple, and…

Throughout the History of Rome, there is a clear progression in its culture and wealth. These advancements are mirrored in the art of the Romans. In contrasting pieces of art, it is important to first identify the time period that each work is from. In this essay the pieces of art that are being compared and contrasted are, “Kritios Boy,” from the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, and “Dying Gaul,” from Capitolini in Rome, Italy. Kritios Boy was created during the Early Classical style period (480- 323 BCE). The Early Classical style is often referred to as Severe or Transitional, as it was known to bridge the gap between the Archaic and Classical. There is controversy as to weather the Kritios Boy belongs to the late Archaic period or to the Early Classical period, however the Kritios Boy displays many Early Classical attributes that seem to confirm it as Early Classical.…
This paper will discuss eight different images from eight different locations based on their themes as well as photographs and images from Exhibition 100+ and Exhibition American Modernism. The different artwork for discussion in the paper comes from China, Italy, and Cyprus. The eight artworks from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts were quite fascinating and poignant for me in terms of their richness in history, culture, religion, and nature. Every piece that I picked held a special message and an emblem of information that put into perspective that I learned in class.…
The cultural artifact that I propose to study is the bust of the Queen Nefertiti who was an Egyptian queen and the Royal Wife of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. The Queen is known to the modern world for her famed illuminous bust that now resides in Berlin’s museum. Nefertiti’s bust was created by the sculptor Thutmose and was discovered in his workshop by the German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt. The bust is an example of providing us, the Ancient Egyptians examples of art and how they regard facial proportions. The bust is considered the most copied works of art from Ancient Egypt.…

One thing in particular that I found intriguing was a sculpture of Alexander the Great. The sculpture I found was miniature and all of the extremities were cut off, however it was beautifully sculpted and extremely detailed. Looking at it, it is obvious that this political leader was revered because of the depiction of his idealized features. Although Alexander the Great’s livelihood occurred several years before the birth of Christ, there are many attributes that bring the two together.…
The renaissance is renowned to be a popular cultural movement in Europe. Conversely the success of the popular Renaissance would not be as we know it if weren’t for outside influences and contributions made before, and during that time period. The revival or “rebirth” of the era did not only occur within Europe, but other parts of the world were also thriving and flourishing. This essay reasons for Renaissance as a global phenomenon, where during an equivalent time period other nations flowered in innovation and through cultural movements, whilst also committing towards Europe Renaissance and human endeavour as a whole. Paving the Way…
Two cultures with very opposing views regarding the roles and portrayal of women are the Etruscans and the Greeks, specifically the Athenians. It is difficult to discern what is true about the Etruscans, because many of the ancient sources about them are from the Greeks, who had a very biased view of Etruscan life. However, we can use this apparent bias to show how the Greeks thought women should behave.…
The most fascinating thing about art is the difference and diversity between works of art. The drastic uniqueness of arts between periods is something that is interesting to look at because one gets to see how much changes can be made due to cultural influences and time. After visiting the Met and seeing the works of art in person, I have chosen the Statute of Dionysus Leaning On A Female Figure and the Standing Buddha Offering Protection to explore in depth. The Standing Buddha Offering Protection is an Indian sculpture made during the late 5th century. It is only 85.5cm tall and it is constructed out of red sandstone.…
Ancient Greece has been heralded as one of the remarkable foundations for global culture. From advances in art and architecture, Greek culture has permeated virtually all of the western world, specifically from the Classical period on. The Kritios Boy represents the beginnings of the quintessential Classical Greek statuary, and will serve as an innovative gateway into the expansive and influential Classical Greek tradition. Through a distinct shift in the representation of the human body and its subsequent development in sculpture, the Kritios Boy emulates Greek ideals of harmony and order, and will influence the development of the Classical style.…
