One of my greatest achievements remains having placed 21 out of 98 for The Ohio Interstate Scholastic Writing League for Outstanding Achievement in Written Expression. This came in regards to trying out the Power of the Pen afterschool program. Feeling it transpired as a tremendous achievement to qualify first for District, followed by Regional, and finally State! Myself, along with the other qualifying students competed at Wooster College for the win at State level, it ensued with disappointment not to win the scholarship. However, it was still wonderful having had the opportunity to compete and represent the Arcadia Local School.

The experience that extremely changed my perspective involved my birth mother. There happened to be an accident two days after Christmas involving my mom, she had died three times and the hospital had her in and out of a coma for weeks due to the pressure on her brain. Nevertheless, the accident gave me a fresh insight into how fleeting life can be, not knowing what can happen in the next split second. However, I instantly have a deeper appreciation for the people in my life, along with the opportunities that come my way. Now, I strive harder to achieve.

An experience that caused me to change my perspective is growing up with a sister with disabilities. My sister was born with Aicardi syndrome, meaning she had about 3 seizures daily, could not walk, talk and got sick often. Growing up I became accustomed to appreciating everything such as being able to run around and play and being able to have a free will. I learned to appreciate my family and be responsible considering that at times my mom spent months with my sister at the hospital and I was in charge at home.…

The first story that I have been through that changed my way of thinking is the time where I thought a worker tried to kidnap me when I was younger when I was lost but in reality he was helping. I was around eight years old when I got lost and I was confused on what to do because I was taught to not talk to strangers. Therefor, I just walked around Target aimlessly looking for my mom. As a result an employee found me and asked if I lost my mom then I said nothing and walked away, but he kept following me so of course I started crying. Without talking to the person I assumed he was trying to hurt me because I was never taught that there were any good people in the world.…

A line of students wrapped around the desks. Why are the other students even trying on this? This is so easy, why would they be worried? The issues of kids being bullied have been around for many years, although it has gotten worse over the past 5 years with the growing technology and use of social media sites. According to a study by the Family and Work Institute, as reported by the National Crime Prevention Council’s website on bullying, about one-third of children are bullied at least once a month (Lee par. 15). Statistics show that something needs to be at the schools, because that it’s one of the many places that bullying is taking place. Although all students who are being bullied are terrified to tell a friend or an adult that they need help dealing with this. According to Dr. Vitelli, who received his doctorate in Psychology from York University in Toronto, Ontario. “While not all bullying victims are willing to come forward, U.S. studies indicate that 28 percent of students in Grades 6 to 12 report experiencing bullying in some form with 30 percent admitting to bullying others (Dr. Vitelli, 2016).” Bullying takes place in the restrooms, halls, stairways, and in classrooms when teachers are not present.…

As a child, my summers consisted of “cooking food for the soul” and creating skits with my younger brother at Gran-Gran’s, my great-grandmother’s home. Her home is where I learned to cook the best macaroni and cheese, dressing, and banana pudding in the world! I also perfected my own banana nut pancakes. On any given day, while the food was in the oven, my brother and I would sit in her basement, writing a new script or song, and rehearsing it nonstop. When we moved from Michigan to Nevada in 2008, my creative side went into full gear.…
