“I can’t do it, I will never be able to!” “It is so much easier for everyone else!” At one point, everyone has felt this way, whether it was because the task ahead of them was too difficult, or just simply too complicated to understand. Although most people are able to get past that point, there are others in society who can’t give up, who deal with the handicaps head-on every day. A great example of overcoming handicaps is in the novel Fried Green Tomatoes; the author Fannie Flagg gives both physical and mental handicaps and shows that it is possible to overcome and grow from them. He had lost his arm at a young age due to a mishap while playing on the train tracks. This new challenge put ahead of him, was one that would take him on a journey both mentally and physically. With any challenge, there comes two main emotions-frustration and desire, with Buddy, there is no exception. The emotional phase was a difficult one for him to deal with, as seen when he starts to lose a game, against a group of his friends. He runs into a backroom deeply frustrated and discouraged, and when his mother Ruth comes in to see what is the matter, he states “I cain’t do anything with this thing, and he began hitting at his missing arm” (147). It is only with the help of Idgie, once again, that Buddy realizes, he can learn to be happy. He learns a lesson that day, a lesson of how desire to do something can overcome the frustration, to bring joy and happiness into a person’s life. Overcoming handicaps is important because it shows that everyone in society can beat out the frustration as long as their desire is stronger. Buddy goes through many challenges in the course of his life, to understand and find who he truly is. He chooses paths along the way, making an identity for himself, showing that through fighting and never giving up, one is able to prove who they
