1. The work of art is titled Burial Mask of Pakal, the Great. The mask was found on Pakal the Great inside of his tomb, the Temple of Inscriptions located in Palenque, Mexico. The mask was made in 683 CE, the same time as Pakal the Great’s death. The burial mask has over 300 tiles crafted out of jadeite, kosmochlor, albite, veined quartz, shell, and pearl. The mask is “life-size”.
2. As I study the picture, I notice how the green color varies and I can see a lot of white and natural earth colors, like brown. I also see that the nose of the mask sticks out unnaturally quite a bit. Specifically above where the eyebrows would be, a portion of the upper nose bridge is clearly raised artificially to make his nose appear much longer. The mouth of the mask is open and the bottom lip sticks out more than the upper lip. While the most of the mask varies in a green color, the eyes appear to be a simple black on white (or cream). There appears to be something in the mouth, although it does not look like it is teeth. I could be wrong, but from looking at several pictures from a few different angles, the left eye in the mask appears to be pointing slightly inward making the mask look a little

Pakal the Great’s real name was K'inich Janaab' Pakal. He was the Maya king who ruled the city-state of Palenque for 68 years (615-683 CE). He was born on March 23rd, 603 and died March 31st, 683. His became king at twelve years old and later married Lady Tzakbu Ajaw, whom he had three sons with. Although Pakal the Great is known as one of the best Mayan leaders, he faced great difficulty in proving himself worthy of the throne due to his mother crowning him king. One of the main ways Pakal tried to prove his right was by creating massive and detailed buildings and monuments like the Temple of the Inscriptions and he improved existing ones like the Palace of Palenque.
