When I was thirteen, we moved to four hours south of Daytona Beach to Fort Lauderdale. This was an adjustment for me because it meant saying bye to my father, grandmother, other family members and friends. My mother was the single parent of two growing teenage boys who could eat you out of house and home. We didn’t have the best of everything, but my mother made sure that we had everything that we needed. She ran a tight ship and we were expected to do our share.…
It was 1981. I had just graduated from high school, and another four-year commitment to “education” was the last thing I wanted to do. The problem was that all those other things required money, and thus a job. Unfortunately, at that time the country was in a severe recession, and the only state that seemed immunized to it was Texas. I had to make the decision whether to leave my birthplace, my family, and my friends or to pursue a new life and adventure over a thousand miles away.…
My whole life I have been homeschooled up till now. This is the first time I have ever been in public school. I love it here in Arkansas, but it is so different than California. California had bad traffic and mean people. I would go to my cousin's house all the time when my mom and dad would go on dates.…
The Life of Conrad Carter I was the first Carter to graduate high school in four generations. The Carter family was a wealthy, prominent family in the community that I grew up in, however my parents divorced when I was three and we were not a part of that prominence. We had to hunt if we wanted meat.…
The day I moved was a remembrance of what is and what was. It was a hot summer afternoon in Nairobi, Kenya with not much to do outside but gaze at the vast sandy lands that envelope part of my village. Every day was a new experience to grow and learn. I used to make kites out of some paper and twigs with a rope tied behind and watch as it soars above me reaching new heights that I could only wish to dream of. Change has been always something I was hesitant on understanding.…
Most people decide to move out at eighteen. I was ten. My parents had made the decision to move to a better school district. I ignored their rationale for leaving completely and begged them not to move us away, but it was to no avail.…
There are people who complain about living in a small town and going to a school where the average class size is only seventy people. Walking down the halls of our high school I can hear people talking in anticipation on how they can’t wait to get away from here. I used to be one of those people. Of course, I am thrilled with the idea of going away to college, but having spent my entire life growing up in Valley I have truly come to appreciate all that it’s close knit community has had to offer me. Looking back at it now, I can remember all the times that people have gone out of their way to help me when it wasn’t required of them.…
All my life I have lived in a town called Fernley, Nevada and it will always be home to me. It is a small community that I had made incredible friendships throughout my school years and just growing up in general. From those hyper elementary years out in the playground, to those clever middle school years, to enjoying my first year of high school at the football games, hearing the cheering crowd, and waiting in the long unorganized line to get snacks, to the town being decorated on every business window with the bleeding colors of orange and black. For me, it was a memorable childhood to have. My summer of my freshman year had ended and I had to move.…
Silence hung in the air like a thick fog. I shot an inquisitive glance at the advisor sitting beside me in hopes that he would speak to break the tension. He exhaled deeply and simply continued tapping the endcap of his pen on the shuffled stack of paperwork that lay before him. In the thirty-five minutes since we had begun our meeting, the couple across from us had managed to roll their chairs so far apart that the wedge had created an imaginary wall of hatred and distrust. It was my second semester as an intern at Quest Capital Management and I was eager to examine how the advisor was going mediate this disagreement and peacefully maneuver the conversation back to the topic of the couple’s spending habits.…
When I was little I lived in Boydton, VA. It was a small town where everybody knew each other and were mostly family. My elementary school was five minutes from my house and family all lived on the same road so everything was comfortable for me. I grew up with an older sister and my parents were married. I loved school and playing outside with my pet dogs.…
I was born in Dothan Alabama I have four brothers and a sister. My parents are divorced and sometimes I think I know what I want to do with my life other times i 'm not so sure. I would say that I am an optimistic person and I am always looking for the next best thing in life. I feel like I can make a different in an individual’s life.…
There are many events in our lives that impact us and shape who we are as individuals. Some may be so minuscule that it takes years to realize how that event has impacted us and some so immensely prominent that it impacts us immediately. One such event in my life that has helped me grow as an individual and find out more about myself was being uprooted from where I grew up in Olive Branch, Mississippi and moving to Ocala, Florida. I was born in Morgantown, West Virginia and at the young age of five my family and I moved to Olive Branch, Mississippi because my father’s job relocated us. Growing up in Olive Branch was amazing and I couldn’t have grown up in a better area.…
Trust Trust is defined as putting one’ confidence in someone or something else. It is essential in our life. It is the hallmark of relationships, without which everything comes to nothing. The word trust discussed in the Creation Health Breakthrough book by Dr. Monica Reed speaks of the Divine Power. It allows us to go through the uncertainties of life with the guarantee that we are directed to a definitive purpose.…
As the daughter of a U.S. Army soldier, I had experienced life changes by the age of 12 that many adults don’t experience in a lifetime. Moving from state to state, country to country, leaving families, friends, homes, and cultures, living through several of my father’s deployments, the most jarring event of my life appears comparatively small. In the summer of 2013, while my family was stationed in northern Italy, my older brother Jed moved to the states to begin college. At the time, I didn’t fully realize the impact this event would have on me. I knew, of course, that my life would change; after all, I would be spending the next few years as the only child of the house.…
When I was just 5 years old, my mother and I moved from New York to Alabama. With there being a 1,000-mile distance between us and the majority of our family, it caused many changes in both of our lives. Because of this I have learned some very valuable things that helped shape me into who I am today. Some of these valuable matters include the lesson that life is far from fair, the value of “quality over quantity”, and that good can surface even in imperfect situations; lessons that I will always remember and cherish. Growing up I was always told that life is not fair.…
