There are many key factors involved in terms of confidentiality with children and adolescents. One factor that stands out to me is the essential need for confidentiality to addressed when working with minors. According to Stone & Isaacs (2003), confidentiality is an important piece because minors may be reluctant to enter sessions and knowing that all information is confidential is an incentive. By letting the client know that all the information discussed in therapy is confidential unless the clients plans to harm themselves or others, then it will have to be broken. I think this is an important aspect when working with minors because parents may feel that what is discussed in therapy is their information to know. In addition, addressing informed consent is also a consideration to keep in mind with minors. Informed consent serve the purpose to engage minor clients, discuss confidentiality in detail, and providing choices to the client. Informed consent is an important ethical consideration with minors. Lastly another confidentiality piece that should be considered is mandated reporting for abuse. I think it is important for therapist to inform their client about the role as a mandated reporter. Overall, I think these considerations for confidentiality with children are extremely important to address with the child and their …show more content…
The main reason why I can see these tools being used is to train children to implement using desired behaviors. I found an interesting article on food aversion for young children. The child had extreme difficult consuming basic table foods and would have tantrums about eating food and a highly restricted diet that he parents had to comply too. The child was introduced into a gradual shaping program for his behaviors. The gradual shaping consisted of classical and operant conditioning methods. After the 25-week trial, the results showed that the child’s eating patterns had greatly improved over the weeks (Siegel, 1982). From this study I think that methods such as those used in the study can be implemented in treatment for cognitive distortions, unwanted behaviors, and many more areas of a child’s functioning. In terms of observed learning, I think that having the parents and therapist mimic appropriate behaviors can help the child to participate in those same behaviors. Conditioning can definitely be a benefit in therapy with
