Currently, over 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease (3). If calculated, with the estimated world population being 7.6 billion, the percentage rate of people living with Parkinson’s would be about .00131% (3). In regards to the idea of genetic factors playing a role in the cause of Parkinson’s disease, the vast majority of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s did not inherit the disease (3). In fact, only 15-25% of people who have Parkinson’s report having a family member who also has PD (3). While this is significant, it also allows there to be space for there to be other causes. In large population studies, scientists have found that people with an affected immediate family member (such as a parent or sibling) have only a 4-9% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s than they would be without the presence of PD within the family
