On March 16th 2017, Natalie Daguiam delivered a persuasive speech to the Speech 2001 class of 25 people at Western University on why sugar is an addictive substance using a PowerPoint presentation as a visual aid. Natalie began her speech with some effective hooks, noticeably grabbing the attention of the audience. This was done in a two-step process, in which she first asked the audience “How do you live a good life?” a general question which seemed to attract some audience attention. She then transitioned into her topic by showing very spectacular and indulging images of sweet desserts while describing how delicious they are, effectively using visual rhetoric to grasp the attention of the remainder of the audience and enhance the pathos of her speech.…

In the past, addiction was not perceived the way it is today. Addiction was not considered to be a disease, but instead a moral defect in the individual. Addiction was viewed through religious and/or cultural beliefs as opposed to being looked at scientifically (Stein and Santos, 1998). All around the world, individuals suffering from addictive behaviours were mistreated due to the lack of education available in regards to mental illnesses. The stories of how our ancestors perceived and treated mental illness in the past is both repulsive and inhumane.…

Bachmann’s condition of living was decent; she was home alone for most of the day only leaving when she needed to go to the store or pick up her daughters. She would sit at home watching the clock tick by, one day putting paper over it so she couldn’t watch the clocks. She even got as bored as thinking to herself that she should reorganize her silverware drawer. She then went to a casino and set strict rules so she didn’t blow through all her money and always was home to pick up her daughters from school. While there was a plan in place, Bachmann fell into the trap of the negatives of addiction and ultimately caused significant damage to relationships as well as financial ruin resulting in bankruptcy court.…

One article begins by explaining eloquently the divide between those who think addiction is a mental illness versus those who do not. They explain: “Anyone suffering or have experienced a loved one struggling with substance abuse will probably be aware of the old argument of whether drug addiction is a mental illness, or a choice. Opinion often seems to be divided up the middle, with some convinced that drug abusers should be punished for their addiction (criminal record, jail sentence etc.), while others are determined that drug abusers should be given help to try and overcome their…
