The day was spent shadowing the doctors and medical students in the pediatric emergency department. Last year, I recalled the first year SEP students observed the adult wing of the emergency department. The similarities between the two sets of populations were interesting. Both sets of patients included individuals with aliments suited for a visit with a primary care physician. This introduces a question about why the ED receives such a high quantity of these cases. One outlook includes the simple time it takes to book a doctor’s appointment, and another view includes ailments that worsen due to a lack of communication with a PCP.
