Pediatric Oncology Nurse Scholarship Essay

I have known since the beginning of high school that I wanted to major in nursing in college. At first, I figured I would go to a larger school where the nursing program does not start until students enter their junior year, however, after I was exposed to the nursing profession through volunteering at St. Louis Children's Hospital, I decided I couldn't wait to get started. I learned how much compassion and wisdom nurses carried with them, and I realized that I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else. This thought is what initially drew me into Truman State University, as I loved the idea of entering the nursing program my very first semester on campus. I am certain Truman will prepare me to achieve my career goal of becoming a pediatric oncology nurse. Hopefully I will be able to work at St. Louis Children's Hospital, where I can continue dedicating my time to helping …show more content…
I shortly realized that is the kind of positive impact I want to be able to make for someone every single day. Although it will be a couple of years before I am able to achieve this goal, the thought of all of the possibilities my future has in store for me will encourage me to achieve my personal goal while I attend Truman. My goal is to become very involved around campus. I plan on joining intramural and clubs, and possibly studying abroad, while still maintaining good grades. As much as I want to leave a positive impact on children when I become a nurse, I want to be able to make the same impact on Truman during my four years. This scholarship will help my family and I tremendously, as it will ease the stress of balancing school, work, and financials. Nursing school is definitely going to be a new challenge, and I hope this scholarship will allow me to stay focused on my schoolwork as much as possible. Thank you for considering me for the Alumni Chapter

I’ve bounced around from wanting to be an ultrasound tech, to a dermatologist and finally came to the conclusion that I want to be a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP). I’ve always enjoyed working with children and the medical aspect of it has always intrigued me as well. Here is why I want to major in nursing.…

College has been a goal of mine ever since I was in elementary school. I have been interested in the medical field for as long as I can remember since my dad is employed at the hospital. I took my state test for becoming a licensed nursing assistant in December of 2016 and passed. This year I have been really focused on job shadowing different possible occupations ranging from a nurse in OB to a nurse in the ICU. Although I really enjoyed nursing, especially in the OB department I am really interested in the field of a Physician's Assistant.…

The interview should be far enough from the waiting room so that others cannot hear the discussion.…

Before the class, I didn’t think much about the stress that they have to deal with from seeing patients suffering pain every day. It is absolutely a hard thing for me to witness and I need to prepare my mentality for that if I work as a nurse in the future. I also learned about different specialties that the occupation provides and various work places, environment settings that nurses work at. I feel that I can make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter, it might be as small as getting a wheelchair if they seem flaccid or weak, a blanket if they are cold, something to drink or just talking to a patient to get their mind off pre-surgery. I look forward to volunteering each week. The most rewarding day by far was being able to witness a nurse giving CPR to a child choking. She saved his life. I would want to someday be able to be able to save a life, not for the recognition but because I want to make a difference.…
