Does your name reflect what you do in your life? If you were a character in C.S. Lewis’s book, Perelandra, your name would describe you, and reveal your personality. C.S. Lewis used the names of his characters to portray their significance, and their place in the plot of the story. His characters’ names have been thought-out, making each name coordinate with the overall story, and coordinating with the stories hidden beneath the main plot. Each name is intentional, and has a meaning deeper than the surface (125).
Ransom was the main character, and the protagonist of the story. According to Dictionary.com the word “ransom” is defined as “a means of deliverance or rescue from punishment for sin, especially the payment of a redemptive fine.” The name “Ransom” was fitting to Ransom’s characteristics (125). He was sent to Perelandra to prevent the fall of the first couple. Ransom saved the king and the Green Lady from their ultimate demise (123). Un-man tempted the Green Lady just like Satan tempted Eve. However, in Perelandra, Ransom stopped the Green Lady from Un-man’s temptations (123), unlike Eve who was not stopped from temptation. The Green Lady’s real name was Tenedril, but the name that Ransom gave her before he knew her real name, was the Green Lady. The name “Green Lady” was an accurate representation of her appearance, and role in the story. She lived in nature with the animals, and her green complexion made her almost blend into the lush scene of Perelandra. She was the only woman on Perelandra at the time.
