Marjane’s goal is to be recognized as a strong woman of her beliefs, and she views her Uncle Anoosh as a role model. For instance, Marjane proclaims, “And I had a hero in my family…naturally I loved him immediately” (Satrapi 54). As shown, Marjane is very proud to have a hero in her family, and she expects to become a significant figure within the future as well. Within her eyes, it would be devastating as well as discouraging to carry the family name in an uncivilized manner. Marjane believes that strolling through the seasons of her time on Earth in a passive way is very disappointing, and she is working to make her family proud. Furthermore, Marjane recalls the impact her family imprints on the world: “There are lots of heroes in my family. My Grandpa was in prison, my Uncle Anoosh too: for nine years! He was even in the USSR. My Great-Uncle Fereydoon proclaimed a Democratic state and he was…too much” (Satrapi 64). The message Marjane is grasping from the difference her family makes while in prison includes the idea that the true meaning of a leader is to sacrifice their freedom and pride for the sake of others. Typically, a prisoner is judged as a person that has caused harm or wrong towards others, and does not deserve to live a luxurious life. Marjane is a very noble and strong woman within her country. She has a fire within her heart to make a difference for herself and in the lives of others. As she grows to remember the enduring challenges of the war during her childhood, this will only strengthen her to persevere and become a leader for others. Many people in their lives pass through each day believing that “someone else can take care of this.” Unfortunately, only a rare quantity of individuals rise to make a change within their society, or fight for what they believe in. All people from all areas of the world, no matter where they may come from, need to look upon the actions of Marjane and reflect upon how they are making a
