Several years ago, when I was a brand new nurse’s aide, I had an experience with a dying patient that changed my perspective completely. I was scheduled to be a 1:1 companion with her for a 12 hour shift. The lady had received the news the day before that she most likely not live more than another week or two. And she was very much at peace with this, when talking to throughout my shift I inquired how she could be so calm and collected. She told me that death was just the next step.…

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…
For my final revision project, I decided to revise my fist essay “The Visible Cancer”. The reason I chose to edit this essay was the special connection that I had to it. When writing this essay, I was very invested in telling the audience how I had felt and describing what had happened with my dad’s cancer as best as I could. In making these revisions I thought it would be a good way to look back on how I viewed the situation when I first wrote this right after it happened compared to how I feel about it now after several months.…
Once again we get to our infusion getaway at 8:30 am for the last of a two-part chemo. You have to psych yourself preparing for another day of this. Like you psych yourself to eat liver as a kid. Or psych yourself for a psycho as president. Well it turns out her white blood count was too low and we had to postpone until next week.…
They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…
I usually don't post personally information about my family or myself, however, about a month ago my Aunt Betsy Donoghue-Wilson got very ill and was hospitalized. After many tests performed and lab work taken she found that she is in Stage 3 Lung Cancer. Furthermore, she went to the hospital yesterday to have her PICC line flushed as she starts her first chemo today, but there were clots in the PICC line, which led to having to administer clot busters to her PICC line. In conclusion she began her first chemo today, however, due to the severity of the chemo, she has to be administered a measure of medications through her PICC line as the chemo she will be having can cause her to go into anaphylactic shock and cause death immediately. However,…

Experiencing something new can be frightening. One of the most nerve-racking experiences I’ve had was when I had surgery for the first time. One day over the summer I started to have pain on the right side of my abdomen. The pain was mild at first but it got worse.…
Each hospital visit required a hospital stay over-night, while all the necessary tests were completed, and where I had a dialysis treatment. Each hospital visit, whilst emotionally draining and exhausting, was simul-taneously charged with hope and possibility. Steve left no stone unturned. He became my health advocate, and my voice, when I was too weak to speak.…
My first chemotherapy session came around the first week of January. Once I got in the hospital, I had no idea what was about happen. There was a bunch of things I had no idea about. Still in denial, I walked in that hospital like a champ; no worries whatsoever. I just tried to block everything out and just focused on getting ready to come home.…
