A Passion for Literacy Literacy, the ability to read and write is very important. Strong literacy skills come into place when one may want to apply for a job. How will one be able to fill out the application? Since I was a little girl I have always adored reading. My parents loved reading also and they read every day. Whether it was a newspaper, book, or magazine they always had something up to their faces. They purchased a lot of books for me and would have me to read one a week. This helped strengthen my comprehension skills and also my ability to write. Because of reading so well, I now love to write. When I was in second grade my teacher, Mrs. Ross, set a specific time for us to read every day. It was called “DEAR”. This meant that we had to Drop Everything and Read. After we ready our book we had to write a short summary of the story. I enjoyed Dear time, it was my favorite part of the class. She had two goals set for us that year. Her first goal was for us to past the second grade exit exam with a Mastery or Advanced. Her second goal was for us to walk out of second grade reading on a fourth grade level. By the time the second semester came I had already reached her goal. This meant that I was …show more content…
The first book I read in high school was “Romeo and Juliet” in the ninth grade. My teacher had us to write our own story about a romance that had a tragic ending. My story had a little twist to it. A girl that liked him took advantage of him and seduced him, and she ended up getting pregnant. To make the long story short his girlfriend told her friends about it and one of his girlfriend’s friends ended up killing the pregnant girl. As stated in the assignment description, literacy is entirely acquired in context. As I’ve known how to read since my early developmental years, it wasn’t that I was able to read something into much later on. Reading a novel is different from reading an article on a newspaper or online as reading a screenplay is different from reading a poem. When I first started college two years ago, I acquired an entirely new literacy of a digital artifact in a digital media class. In the class, a core project was the development of a professional personal website.…

A girl at school once asked me, “How are you in this constant state of reading?” I laughed because the answer is simple: I love to read. I chose books as a symbol because reading and literature is very important to my culture and my family. When my father was young, his grandmother used to read to him every day, and my father did the same for my siblings and I. Ever since I was a little girl I have loved to read, and I own many books that I keep on shelves.…

Because of this, reading with my mother turned into the most frustrating, yet satisfying learning experience of my early childhood. I would gleefully sit beside my mother on the couch, hand her my favorite book, and beg, “Just another chapter, please!” And, as a loving and encouraging parent, she would happily oblige and fulfill my wish. Attentively listening, my eyes would follow her finger, hoping that something would click in my head. As we read, she would prod me to study and sound out the words on my own so that I would become familiar with the rules of grammar.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

I remember my kindergarten days, when most of class time consisted of learning phonics in class. I recall doing this as the whole class repeating the sounds of letters in unison. We would all go “st, st, st” as we learned how different sounds came together. The alphabet also started becoming relevant in kindergarten. A fair amount of time was spent tracing letters of the alphabet and remembering how to scribe each one.…

Pivotal Moment in Literacy Development Getting my hands Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was a pivotal moment in my literacy development. I remember receiving the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, at the age of 11 for Christmas. There were six other books that followed, all better than the last. At the pace that these books were released, they had successfully accompanied me through my critical years of development and on to adulthood. JK Rowling and her creations unknowingly gifted to me an expansive imagination, patience, and enabled me to relate to similar social issues such as racism and bigotry that were not only present in the real world, but in the Wizarding world as well.…
