Personal Narrative: American Girl Place

As the hard winds of New York City hit my face, I looked up in adornment at the giant gold letters reading, “American Girl Place” for the first time. I faced my father, his giant frame proceeding over my small nine-year-old one, looking into his eyes waiting for the signal that meant I could go in. He smiled at me, took my hand, and led me inside. A burst of excitement filled up inside of me as I walked in and saw the arrangement of dolls lined up inside a glass case. Coincidentally, young girls began to disappear from the neighborhood park around the same time. Robbie’s friend, an undisclosed tall man, encouraged him to take the “found dolls,” emphasizing that they deserved them and no one could take them away from them. This man seems to take the role of Robbie’s father if he had been supportive and understanding of the things that Robbie wants to do. Robbie projects the nurturing and caring he does not receive from his father onto the dolls. He laid the dolls in little wooden basinets and frequently checked in on them to admire and play with them.…

Although familial presence did impact how girls engaged with their dolls, the idealized innocent girl playing mother to her baby doll was not always the case. Girls often subverted authority and the expectation of prescribed play by “pushing the margins of acceptable feminine and genteel behaviour” (Forman-Brunell, 235). They acted aggressively towards their dolls offer afflicting punish and discipline upon them, or reenacting funerals not for the purpose of practicing social rituals but instead “were often more interested in the unfeminine events that led to these solemn…

Sandra Cisneros’s short story, “Barbie-Q”, describes the hardships endured by a young girl, never identified by name, and the less-fortunate life she and her family lead. The child discloses the rarity of new toys, but purchases damaged Barbie dolls while on a trip to the flea market. The narrator acknowledges the flaws of the Barbies, but counters the stereotypical “perfect” woman standards by implying her gratefulness of possessing any dolls at all. Through this struggle, the girl learns to cope with her burdened lifestyle while also encountering gender roles and values. Cisneros wrote this story in relation to her own childhood, motivated by the social standards of gender roles and body image in relation to the Barbie doll.…

The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…

Unlike many teenagers I didn’t, have a transition period from childhood to teenage years to adulthood, like so many others here in America might have. My life went from a carefree child to being a mature and responsible adult within a matter of months, and here is how it all started. The fact or the matter is that I was born in a refugee camp in Nepal and life wasn’t easy with death and disease looming everywhere. I roamed the streets as carefree as young kid could. Life was normal as I went to school every day, my dad worked countless hours, and my mother stayed home like so many other women in the community.…

The relentless beeping of the monitor attached by a web of cords to her fragile little body is a constant reminder of my daughter’s congenital heart disease. Her grandpa, seated beside me on the hard plastic hospital chair, moves restless hands between his pocket and hanky, his eyes fixed on every rise and fall of her chest, longing to hold and comfort his first grandchild. My daughter’s birth wasn’t like the beautiful stories I’d heard or movies I’d seen. It was silent - her scrawny, little, blue body, static in the cold air of the big world. My father sitting beside me, mumbles, ‘heart disease is in the family you know...…
