Personal Narrative: An Incident At Spring Break

I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature. The sun was out that day, but it was still a chilly breeze since it was late March. I was wearing a gray and white polka dot scarf that my older sister had bought for me. She and I saw the go-karts and decided to ride them. The adrenaline of going around the sharp turns on the track had clouded my mind and before I knew it my scarf was gone with the wind. “ KEARA WHAT IS THAT ON YOUR NECK?!”, exclaimed my mom once I had got off the ride. …show more content…
My neck looked like a skinless chicken breast. It took less than a second for me to go into a full blown panic attack while my parents scrambled to get me to the nearest Walgreens. Once we returned home, I went to the doctor’s office. Initially they asked my dad to step out of the room and asked me questions about how it actually happened; implying that my parents had abused me. I told her the full story and she simply replied that I could have been decapitated. Now me being fourteen at the time I couldn’t comprehend the severity of what she saying. Surprisingly enough, I just smiled and continued to make jokes about my scar. After missing three weeks of school my peers were astonished by how I was so comfortable about talking about the giant scab, pus- oozing, scar around my neck. I do admit that it was hard to sleep since I couldn’t bend my neck and to make it more embarrassing my dad had insisted that I wear a neck

So, having read this title you can probably guess this story is going to have something to do with a broken bone. If you didn’t guess that then, you should probably become a better guesser. It was around 6:00 pm, and my mom, and sister's Nikki and Tori, and myself, all walked out of the dirty, cream-colored door, leading into the garage at our house. As we piled into our dark blue mini-van to go to my third-grade parent/teacher/student conference, nervous energy was suspended in my skull. The nervousness didn't surprise me. I always felt fear whenever I headed to the parent/teacher conference.…

It was the perfect plan. My parents were completely unaware; I told them that I was studying at a friend’s house, waving the “grades” flag that was sure to blindfold them into ignorance. All of my contraband was hidden in my backpack, away from the eyes of peering mothers, and years of obedience meant my parents would never suspect anything like this from me; I was their good girl, their angel. Once all the preparations were made, I left through the front door and got into my friend’s car, ready to sneak off to a forbidden place. We were headed, with my contraband picket signs in my backpack, not to a party, but to my first rally—a Black Lives Matter rally.…

There was a handful of eye opening experience’s I witnessed throughout my time in the DR, and these things I will never forget. Throughout the trip I personally learned a lot from the people of the community, because they didn’t have the best living circumstances but they always had a smile on their faces. There was a time when I was young and naive; more than I am now as this event is taking place around seven years ago. It was the ordinary school day, starting with my mom dropping me off through carpool, eating a granola bar in the car since I was late sleeper and whiner. Every single morning of my second-grade year, we started with vocabulary words and this day happened to be a Monday, meaning we would receive new words to cut and paste into a small notebook. Frankly, I did not enjoy that being the first activity of the day. Grammar has nevr and will nevre be my favorite subject.…
