“BEEP BEEP BEEP.” My alarm exploded with noise. I needed to get to my plane as soon as possible to make it to Tampa Bay, Florida for the Tampa Contest. I slipped on some jeans, threw on a shirt, and combed my brown hair down. I grabbed my skateboard and my unaccompanied minor pass. I sprinted out the door into the brisk air of California to catch my taxi for the plane ride. When I arrived in Tampa, it was warm and humid. It was sunny and busy in the airport. I met up with my friend, John, who was the one who invited me and invented the contest. “How’s a going Ryan,” asked John. “Great,” I replied. We sputtered off in his car to go get some lunch before the warmup for the contest. “This is great chicken,” I explained to John. “Yeah, it’s the best around,” he responded. We drove off to the contest right after I finished …show more content…
I really wanted to get 3rd or better so I could be in street league at age 13. Most of the people around me were in their 20’s or 30’s. I was the youngest one there by a lot. I inspected the course trying to figure out my first run. I decided I would make my way around the course and then grind the rail that lead down the stairs. Since I qualified 3rd to last to make it to the Tampa contest, I had to go third. I watched the first two guys do their 30 second runs. They are really good, I thought to myself. It all happened so fast. The spotlight was on me. I dropped in and aimed for the mini ramp. I tried to do a 360 from one side to the other and badly messed up. I got back up, fear rushing through my body. Next I tried to do a kick flip over the gap. I barely stuck it and kept going. I tried to backside flip off the stairs instead of grinding the rail. I almost landed but then my board flew out from under me. My time was up. Everybody there was probably thinking that I wasn’t good enough to be in this contest. I was as nervous as could

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

Working in an office, specifically in the front desk, to many is a mundane, straight forward, pretty repetitive job. What could be so awful about working in an office, right? I unfortunately work at a taxicab company and let me start of by saying that there is nothing mundane about this place. On a day to day basis, I find myself struggling to remain positive, stress-free and most of the time end up failing at keeping my spirits up. After viewing the movie, What the Bleep Do We Know?…

The day seemed to drag on and on, as I waited, counting down the days to California. It was a humid, sunny afternoon down at the Alton pool, where I usually spend most of my summer days working as a lifeguard. Today was very different than most…. And maybe the reason why was because it was my last day of work before I flew off to the big L.A. Most days at the pool the time went by slower than any I have ever known, with the scorching hot sun burning my skin, and little kids yelling at their friends telling each other secrets or what they want to play next.…

It was a Tuesday, on September 22nd, 2015, I claimed my seat by the window of a Southwest plane, and leaned down to shove my large purple bag below my seat. I had put my headphones over my ears to escape the noises of the world around me. I turned my head to my dad and brother Taylor, they were adjusting to get comfortable, and then I rotated the opposite way to stare out the tiny window. It was a sunny afternoon, I was already thrilled to get out of high school, and to go to Florida was even better! I haven’t been to Florida in over 7 years and before that my family used to go every year.…
