The morning starts bright and early, children arrive, their eyes are filled with excitement. Singing and dancing takes place, children laughing and playing with friends; they learn new stories and something new each day of the week. There is glitter, glue, paper, and stickers on the floor. Kids are surrounding you, wanting you to be their new best friend. Some children already know about Jesus and stories from the Bible. Whereas others, do not and their faith is now being planted and is starting to grow. This summer I had the privilege to teach a vacation bible school in Rock Hill, South Carolina. That experience has helped my faith and opened my eyes to other options in my future. This past summer I and several students from my church, St. John’s Wauwatosa, had the opportunity again to go to Illumine. Illumine is a church in South Carolina, which was started by former members at our church, who moved down south. It started in the middle of July, when 40 students and eight chaperones took four vans and began our journey. We drove down there in one very long day, around 14 hours. The next day we went to church and started to prep for the week's adventure. This year’s theme for the vacation bible school was ocean themed. …show more content…
One was their biological daughter; and the other was a friend who the family took in as theirs. The little girl who was not their real child was going through a lot of family problems. Those two little girls had such strong faith for only being four and six. They wanted to know more and more about Jesus. When others had questions the girls would explain and teach the other more about Jesus. They knew what they were talking about, and they were not afraid to express their faith. That moment inspired me, I should be like those little girls and be confident in my faith. I shouldn’t be scared or nervous to talk to others about what I

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

As I wake up, my stomach quivers with fear and anxiety. My body reminds me of what my mind desperately tries to forget. As I dress, I keep in mind what I wear will be seen by everybody at the event. I devour a bowl of Cocoa Puffs in hope that my stomach becomes alleviated. Today, the Forrest County Spelling Bee commences at Presbyterian Christian School, and I am a competitor.…

Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. Growing up Non-Denominational Christian is fairly simple faith and to me…

In order to fulfill the requirements of this paper, I attended a ministry called Common Ground. Common Ground is an after-school mentoring program for underprivileged children in kindergarten through fifth grade that reside here in Waxahachie, Texas. This ministry has volunteers that help the children with their homework, includes a reading program to help the children become better readers and improve their comprehension skills, and allows the volunteers to spend one-on-one time with the children in order to share the love of Christ to them. While attending this ministry I noticed not only one, but several social needs.…

My life before my conversion consisted mainly of growing up in a Southern Baptist Church. Throughout my life I have heard the gospel countless times, but never accepted it as absolute truth to follow. Instead, my life until college was characterized by performing a lot of religious activity such as youth groups, church camps, and going to church on Sundays. I was in a tireless attempt to live out a religion that proved I was good enough to be declared righteous before God. It was a restless attempt to be whatever everyone else want me to be.…

Leadership on the line by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linksys is a very timely book. Maggie’s description of her Indian community and the effects of alcohol made me think of many urban communities and the pain that lurks in those communities. The stories she shares about Lois and the heart she had for her community and desire to make it better make you think we need more leaders like that. Lois leadership inspired me because she saw something wrong in her community she believed she could bring change. Lois is a good picture of servanthood she doesn’t sit and think someone should so something…

After working at a Christian high school for over two decades it is exciting and to see former students beginning their adult lives with great job prospects from their excellent college education, yet very discouraging to learn that many make the decision to abandon their belief system and leave church behind. Ultimately, one would like to see young adults be more excited about their faith, and the religion in which they were raised. Rather than concentrating on the fact that young adults are leaving their faith, it is more important to examine the reasons why they choose to leave. Christianity in America is in danger. “In the mid-1980s, evangelical 20-somethings outnumbered those with no religious affiliation by a ratio of more than 2 to 1.…

    1. What will it take to get parents to become the teachers of spiritual truths to their children? If parents would understand that God has mandated them to teach their children, Christian parents would be more likely to become the teachers of spiritual truths to their children. God has mandated it so much so that He expected the Israeli parents to follow His instruction of teaching their children during the everyday walk and events of life, through intentional and modeling means.…

On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head. The feelings of excitement, joy, and love were very tangible in my heart. My mom and dad were both sitting beside me on my bed while I was told the importance of this decision and how my life would never be the same. Even at 5 years old, I was aware of my decision to follow Jesus and accept him into my heart.…

During my childhood and lower teens, I was very involved in church. I would go to every event or meeting put on by our church. Watching certain senior youth members, I didn’t understand why they would just come to the fun events. I would only see them during our mission trips or camps, but never at business or regular meetings. Then I promised myself that I would always stay as active as I could.…

Sweaty palms, a racing heart, and a mind occupied with doubt were rushing through me as I sat in a room full of complete and total strangers. These strangers happened to be thirty wide-eyed children who were staring up at me with admiration and utter awe. I was from America. Yes, this may seem completely normal, but to the thirty South African children, America represented so much more than just a country on the other side of the world. America represented hope.…
