I wanted to try to learn how to surf but I had a fear of swimming in the great big blue ocean. A little guy like me could drown I thought, but I might as well try it. The weather was warm, but the water was warmer. "It is a great day to go surfing" said Koda. I could feel the soft squishy sand as I got down on my stomach and rolled onto my board. When I was 12, my father showed me the documentary, “ESPN:20 for 20-Hawaiian; The Legend of Eddie Aikau.” This documentary opened up a whole different world to me. I was never the type of typical person who enjoyed to surf, unlike half of the people in Hawaii. As being a Big Island grown girl, I liked to bodyboard rather than surf. Surfing is more of an O’ahu kind of sport.…

I try to duck dive it but the wave rips the board from underneath me and picks me up and throws me around like a washing machine. The ferociousness and power of the wave tears my leg rope in half losing my surfboard and its buoyancy it gave me. I pop up on the other side of the wave and gasp some air. The next wave doubles up but I manage to get underneath the wall of water.…

The waves softly crashed along the seashore and drew themselves nearer and nearer as if they were signaling for me to join them and play their games. Grinning to myself I decided that I would join in their fun. I took a giant deep breath and leaped into the glossy salted water. The water was cool and refreshing; I felt it slip through my hair making it sway in the water. I swam deeper and deeper into the turquoise ocean.…

After adjusting to the chill temperature of the water, I sat on some rocks and let the waves knock me around. On the other hand, the rest of my family had grown restless, wanting to brave the increasingly high waves. After treading water for a bit, my father decided it would be a great idea to swim to the buoy—really just a piece of wood—that was thirty feet away in the waves. My sister Sarah and I accepted the challenge…

I can still hear the soothing sound of the waves crashing down as I woke up from my nap with sweat glueing my sun beaten face to the blanket upon a bed of sand. Digging holes with my dad or riding the surf my long days by the ocean exhausted my younger self. For as long as I can remember at the same time in July every year my family set to the road for a 6 hour journey to the coast. A tradition that has been a part of my family for years. When we finally arrived at the breathtaking shore, we wasted no time before jumping through the waves.…

Each year, a pilgrimage to the Florida or Alabama gulf coast is a highly anticipated and enjoyed event for my family. In the beginning, it was just my wife and I. Man oh man, these trips were some of the most relaxing times that I can remember. Now, our yearly “beach fest” includes our two children, Kaylee and Garrett. While this is still a wonderful family event, I no longer use the phrase “relaxing”. Elbert Hubbard once said, “No man needs a vacation so much as the man who just had one”.…

But once I got out there in the water I would gradually start to love the ocean. Each time I would get braver and go out further, as my mom sat on the beach and watch my brother and I closely. The farther out I would go the water would get this magnificent blue; for allowing you to see all types of beautiful sea shell with all sorts of colors in them, the tropical fish reminded me of the movie Finding Nemo, little pale pieces of sand dollars washed up in the waves on the banks. The sand resemble of…
