Personal Narrative Essay: Joining The United States Air Force

Joining the United States Air Force was one of the craziest decisions of my life; however, when life gets crazy, you need an equally crazy solution. The main points that lead to my first day at basic we’re some of the most defeating and inspiring moments of my life. I was struggling to hold a minimum wage job, just had my heart broken by my high school sweet heart and was living couch-to-couch. If it wasn’t for my failures, I wouldn’t have everything I have today. Transitioning from high school to adulthood was like trying to find air after being crushed by a wave. My parents kicked me out and I immediately moved in with my on again/off again boyfriend and his family. I was lucky enough to receive money from FASFA but didn’t have the restraint to spend it on things that I needed, such as supplies for college or bus money. With nothing in savings, I decided to move back to my parents so that I wouldn’t be a burden on their family. Our relationship was also falling apart, so we decided to take a break. After moving in with my parents again, I started to develop depression. I stopped going to school after a horrible first semester in …show more content…
I was making decent money as waitress, was back with my high school sweet heart and was able to rent a room. Unfortunately, bad things happen in threes. My job was a bar owned by friends with a drinking problem and they had to shut down due to the lack of alcohol to sell. Shortly after, my landlord raised almost 50%, which made the room way out of my price range. The one who I thought was the love of my life, told me that it was time for us to move on to better things and at the time I didn’t believe I had anything better in me. With nothing better to look forward to and no funds, I moved back into my parents for the last time. The day after my friend dropped off all my things, I drove down to my local recruiting office to see what the branches have to

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

I still remember, my body uncontrollably shivering as I curled into the fetal position under a tree trying to conserve whatever warmth I could retain. The cold weather was merciless, its rain poured and the wind blew erratically upon my flimsy poncho as stray beads of water seeped through the micro-tears of my poncho’s fabric. For hours, I remained wedged on the ground as my vision begun to fade. Slowly, I let myself drift into the darkness as my mind went numb and my face grimaced. I wanted to cry, until I heard from the corner of my head say, “YOU’RE NOT A QUITTER, DON’T GIVE UP!”…

Last summer I found God, comfort, and a feeling of belonging in a place much different than home. I spent a week at the Naval Academy, in a program that aimed to replicate the physical and mental rigors of the training. I spent the week swimming in the mud, being woken up by screaming detailers, following drill after drill, and relentlessly memorizing sayings and mannerisms to follow without mistakes. On Sunday there was an offering of Catholic and Protestant services at the Naval Academy Chapel.…

I found out about Particle Acceleration when I went to the United States Air Force Academy Summer Seminar in a class where we learned about propulsion. The topic covered was electrodynamics and it related to a particle accelerator. I have researched the particle accelerator online and watched videos over the CERN, largest particle accelerator in the world. I would like to further my studies in this topic so I can develop a large understanding of exactly how and why the particle accelerator is used. Also, if possible, make one on a way smaller scale than the CERN.…

Minus one plus nine. Writing about my personal experience, made me think about all the Noncommissioned officers (NCOs) who led me throughout my military career and personal life. It also made me recall the obstacles I faced and overcame throughout my career that shaped me to who I am today. "Minus one plus nine" is the symbolism that I use to describe the story of how I joined the Army as an Enlisted Soldier and the barriers that I have surpassed throughout my career to reach the rank of Sergeant Major (E-9). Do you speak English?…

I’ve had many positive experiences in my life, but my experience joining the Air Force and completing Basic Training had the greatest impact. I did not take high school seriously, because I signed to join the Air Force in my junior year of high school. Since I knew where I was going, I did not feel the need to apply myself in all my classes. I did just enough to graduate high school. Then September came, the month I left to Basic Military Training.…
