Personal Narrative: Hersey-Blanchard Method And Servant Leadership

Improved Essays
My introduction to advocacy occurred during graduate school. During this time I served two years as the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) Emerging Scholars contact for Neumann University. Initially, I attended the regional conferences to network and have new learnings. Again, I did not plan to be a leader in the organization, then I realized Neumann did not have a representative to assist the Regional Emerging Scholars Representative, so I volunteered. Staying true to Greenland’s theory, I wanted to do more to engage my peers about the organization and felt empowered to fill the role. Serving as the point of contact, helped the organization to reach students for association updates and conference details.

Even though I have not begun formal instructing future counselors, I believe my role as an Admissions Supervisor is partially that of an educator. As discussed earlier, when training clinicians I utilize the Hersey-Blanchard Method, maintaining the Person-Centered approach, meeting the person where they are in their skill set. While using this style, I often find gaps in the material provided by corporate and to reduce the anxiety of the trainee, I create reference notes that are used as a quick guide for the computer

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Patisepa, Thank you for your post. Your selection of The Waltons, is one that I never would have chosen, yet I am glad that you selected it, as it brings back many memories from my youth. Olivia Walton is an iconic example of leadership for this family. As I consider this character, I see her in terms of a servant leader who attends to her family. Northouse (2013) defines servant leadership, as that in which one is “attentive to the needs of followers, empower them, and help them develop their full human capacities” (p.248).…

I began to wonder, are we allowed to sing outside during recess?…

There are multiple ways I am a leader within my community. The main way I lead my peers is through sports. I have been on my different teams; volleyball, basketball, track, and softball have all given me the opportunity to build my character and to lead by example. I was the volleyball team captain for my junior and senior year, so many of the younger girls were looking up to me. The best way to lead is by your actions; I would always go hard in practices and games to show the underclassmen that in order to get the best results, you need to give it your all.…

As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…

There are many ways in which one can advocate for the counseling profession as well as clients. I noticed that counselors I have spoken to view the advocacy they perform to be the work they conduct with clients. Specifically, the community agency I interviewed, Family Resources, considered the work they conduct to ensure local families have appropriate resources and care as a critical aspect of their advocacy efforts in the field. The interview with the agency highlighted the importance counselors place on their client’s welfare. They consider their role as client advocate to be the reason they work as counselors.…

Being a leadership minor, I already have my leadership philosophy that i feel fits hand in hand with my coaching philosophy. Since I was in elementary school, I knew that I was a leader on the court and in the classroom. . It started at the age of 5 with being apart of my first AAU basketball team, all the way to mentoring kids at leadership camps. I always stood up for what I believed and fought for my voice to be heard not only for myself but also my peers. Something that stuck with me throughout the years is the idea of being a servant leader.…

I often found myself fighting against social injustices, such as discrimination and finding the dignity and worth of the client I was serving, despite his or her life challenges. After careful consideration, I decided to become properly trained in advocacy and started my academic career in the pursuit of a Social Work Degree. This is the reason I am pursuing my master degree in social work at Louisiana State University.…
