Personal Narrative: Leverndale Hospital

‘’ I don’t like it here. I don’t stay here. I don’t know anyone around here. I just want back to my house with all my own things’’. My gran would say this on a regular basis and even though she stayed in the same house for the last five years she couldn’t remember anything. It’s amazing and scary what a difference a year can make. It’s also fascinating what it can do to a person and the people surrounding them. One day they’re so full of life and happy, the next they can’t even remember special family events and milestones.

It was mid April when we first noticed something was wrong. I had just got home from school, when my mum got a phone call from my gran’s friend. He told us that when my gran woke up that day she was very confused and that she couldn’t remember that her mum and dad had passed away, when they had actually died twenty years previously! She also couldn’t remember peoples’ names and kept imagining people had visited her, when in reality she

This time she was taken to ‘Leverndale Hospital’ which is a psychiatric hospital. The day she was taken to hospital was the 14th January which was exactly one year since her best friend’s funeral. So much had changed since then. She was no longer happy, a lot less independent and she had a lot less freedom. During the first few weeks at Leverndale she was told that she would be taken for a technological advanced scan from Holland to see if they could find out why she was forgetting things. When the results came back a few weeks later, they said the results came back clear, so there should be nothing wrong with her. This was nearly a year and a half since her condition started and we still didn’t have a diagnosis. I remember going up to visit her for the first time and hating it. My final day at the Wallace Thompson hospital was a great and memorialized day . I was able to interact and see with different procedures , and even look at some of the procedures I already seen, but with different patients so different outcomes was definitely a factor. I saw a possible gastrointestinal lymphoma , which was odd for myself considering the fact that I thought lymphoma was only considering the lymph nodes. I was also able to see an I&D of the perineal and groin area. That had to be the most disgusting yet intriguing to me.…

Eventually we flagged her down and she didn’t even remember where she was going, she said that she felt as if she was driving without a destination. Her exact words were “I wanted to go home, but I didn’t know where home was.” Not long after this we took her to the doctor, they gave her some pills and sent her home. But as time passed, she got worse, her organs were failing and her body was retaining water. Eventually they put her in Ruffing Nursing Home, right across from where her and my grandfather lived.…

She has always had nurses and doctors that treat her with the utmost respect. Nothing has been hidden from her they have always told her what exactly was happening and what was going to happen next. We still to this day do not know who was selfless enough to donate their child organs so others to live, but we will be eternally in grateful that they made that choice. Our daughter would not be able to stand here next to me if it had not been for their…

While a person could live for a long period of time, it is unavoidable to have changes. Ever since I was young my mother would take me to visit my grandmother during weekends and I enjoyed every moment of it. My grandmother used to buy me pizza and spaghetti for dinner and take me to play in a park nearby her house, I surely love my grandmother. However back then I couldn’t help but notice her painful face whenever she’d sit down or pick up a pencil, she would even take really long to walk up the stairs and sometimes she would also say that her legs hurt a lot after the walk. She used to tell me how she could walk to the shop across town with not a single problem, but now she couldn’t even go up the stairs without help.…

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

By the time I received the email announcement that University of Michigan Health System diagnosed me with Acquired Dyscalculia, I felt like sinking into a bottomless glacial. Everything around me appeared as featureless hollow darkness. I heard with a chill on my back that the car accident occurred last summer was speculated to be cause. It was on way home back from Thailand, where I went to support the education at Vieng Neua Primary School as a volunteer. I was afraid, indeed, that the dyscalculia—a name that I had not heard before and a disease I was totally not familiar with—would jeopardize and ruin my study and life.…

My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…

My mother sat there quietly in her room more than usual and all I heard from her talking on the phone was to keep my aunt in everyone’s prayers. My mother went to the hospital every day to be with her. Her condition only grew worse. I still remember seeing her bright smile and hearing her contagious laughter echoing down the hallway during the first week at the hospital. However, I also remember that she drastically changed over the next month.…

My brother recently had surgery at the VA Hospital in Lexington, and once he thought he was himself again, he pushed to go home. The problem was that he had no one at home to care for him. His children live in California, and he couldn’t come with me because I was leaving for a week. I told him he had to stay in an extended care facility. I remember my mom saying “She was a grumpy grandma, but she had her fun moments.” My uncle told us that In her teen years she got very ill and almost died, but she said she saw a light and a man saying “What are you doing here you’re not supposed to be here yet. You’re going to live for a long time and have a big family.” I also learned that she married young and grew up in a tiny town in Mexico called Tequila.…
