Personal Narrative: Losing In High School

Losing eventually becomes a normal event until you feel what it is like to win. For most of my life I didn’t mind losing. I would quit tasks if they proved too difficult or time- consuming. Losing was common to me, and I didn’t care, until I won something on my own accord. The sophomore year of my high school career was the worst year of my life, easily. It was the year my father, David Lane Brown, died after 3 years of suffering lung cancer. I was already a poor student, yes I was in the Longview High School International Baccalaureate Program, but nevertheless, I was a reluctant student, with both of my parents pleading me to do absolutely anything productive in school, Boy Scouts, or Technology Students Association (TSA). Comparatively to my second- oldest sister, who was soon to be valedictorian of her grade, I was a nothing. I was getting nothing done, and I was wasting myself and my potential away. That all changed when a friend of my sister’s (Heidy Soto) invited me to be on her Technology Bowl team in TSA, an event focused on asking technology- intensive trivia questions. It seemed interesting, as before I had never really cared to look extensively through the events that TSA offered. Regardless, I didn’t study much at all for the event. Soon enough, state competition came (I had advanced in a different event at regionals), and after passing the written exam, it was time for the oral competition rounds. The team was a success, and with every round that we won, I was becoming more and more engaged in the event. We made it to the semi- finals round, and we lost to the opposing team, badly, and moved on to the losing- finals round (for third and …show more content…
My academic performance has increased, I have grown to be more involved in scouting on my own accord, and as far as I can see, I have grown very much. After finally knowing victory, I can only crave it

“If I do not believe as you believe, it proves that you do not believe as I believe, and that is all that it proves,” wrote author and political activist Thomas Paine, his belief, regarding beliefs. Every person has the right to believe in what they choose, but no one has the right to tell him or her that he or she is wrong. Merriam-Webster defines belief as “conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence. ” Beliefs are not restricted to religious things, and they can be as simple as believing that you will wake up tomorrow.…

5067 Pro-competition In the working world people are always striving to be better than their peers to get that promotion or raise. Whether it’s their rival company or their co-workers you are always competing to be better. So is it beneficial to have kids grow up thinking that there will be no competition in the world and they will always get that participation trophy? I think that competition is beneficial because if you do not have competition growing up then you will not be prepared for the real world where competition is everywhere.…

As the stadium lights slowly began to blind me, the smile I was wearing started to fade as I felt an overwhelming, nauseating sensation flow over my entire body; I thought that flags only slipped through hands on battlefields, not on a Friday night during a high school half time show. Failure is a one-way mirror. When standing in front of the mirror, the failure simply stares back in the form of a reflection. My first performance for the high school color guard amounted to the show flag slipping through my clutches and slamming onto the freshly cut, football field grass. The searing embarrassment that followed felt like the end of the world.…

The journey to victory is one bumpy never ending road of madness fueled by repeated failure and pure motivation and desire. By the end of the road trip the failure is no longer seen as an obstacle or a dead end, but rather a fiery motive to reach the ultimate goal. Various well known successes were once categorized as a so called failure. All victories or accomplishments have losses that are used as motivation and determination to take a leap towards victory like all great successes have done multiple times before. To start off, even one of the most intelligent people to ever walk the earth has had step backs or problems with his studies.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, and difficulty.” A quote from Theodore Roosevelt that is not getting installed into the youth of this and last generation’s minds. Participation trophies demolished this belief and many others. We need to completely demolish the “everybody gets a trophy” idea. It has demoralized awards, neglected to teach children about failure and loss, abused their self-esteem, and not ready them for life ahead.…

Gordon B. Hinckley had once said something along the lines of hard work paying off, if effort is enforced into the work. Over the years I’ve had in high school I have really absorbed the aspect of this, being able to work up and achieve opportunities for the preparation in the outside world. Seventh and eighth grade having to understand the concepts in the athletic sport tennis was hard for me to comprehend. Actually being able to have proper etiquette of holding a tennis racquet was key, but being able to hit a tennis ball was a ‘whole other ball game.’ All two years of playing tennis in middle school I can not remember a single time me nor my tennis partner won a match.…

Losing is a Win The choice is simple, you can either praise your child for every little thing no matter the outcome, or allow your child to learn the best life lessons that can be taught to them by playing sports. When we are a child we look at life with rose-colored glasses, as parents if we allow our children to continue to look through their eyes in that way, they will miss the valuable opportunity to learn how to cope when life is no longer that rose color. Some parents want to protect their children so much that they do not allow their child to feel a lose, while other parents chose to allow their children to feel a lose which in turn will help them deal with such disappointment. It is not society that cares about the victory of a child, it is the parents that put so much pressure on the outcome of their child’s efforts.…
