In our first assignment we volunteered in Tulsa Food Bank. Tulsa food bank was founded in 1981. The Food Bank distributed more than 21.6 million pounds of food throughout the 24 counties of eastern Oklahoma. As I have given brief information about the organization we volunteered for. I will talk about what we have done in the Tulsa food bank.…
I enjoyed the experience so much that I found myself continuing to volunteer there even after my volunteer hours were done. I initially had dreams of one day opening my own non-profit organization, as well as my own mental health facility and what I learned from my experience there just reassured me that opening my own non-profit…
I started volunteering at St. Martha's Pantry in sixth grade until my freshman year. I also devoted my volunteering at my local church's food pantry. Everyday after school, I would bag canned food for people who could not afford groceries…
I have had various experiences in the last two years, but the one I feel is the most significant is the time I spent volunteering for the Detroit Mission Trip. This opportunity presented itself in June of 2014 through my church, Metro South Church. I spent one week, Monday through Friday, each day-all day, commuting from my home in Brownstown to the inner city of Detroit. Each day of this mission trip consisted of various volunteer jobs. I was one of approximately 100 people that engaged in the process of making life better for others.…
When I went on a mission trip in Florida three years ago we helped at a local soup kitchen. It was amazing to see just how many people showed up. Most of these people didn’t even come alone, they had children, brothers, sisters, even good friends who were just stuck and needed help. I sat and talked with some of the people, they told…
Another huge experience that has changed my outlook on life was going to the service project for the Isaac school district. The children attending the schools at the Isaac school district are in intense poverty. I have gone during the school days to help out in the classroom, to bring Thanksgiving dinner boxes, and to deliver a Christmas gifts to the kids. The kids on these campuses have the most amazing attitudes in the worst conditions. Some of the children go home on Friday and don't have a meal until they come back to school on Monday.…
When volunteering at West Minnehaha it made me realize things that I didn’t pay attention to before going in. The point was to build relationships, problem solve, what to do in a conflict situation, and step outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to do every single one of those things. I realized that the kids are in need of someone who they can look up to and a dependable person who they can count on. For example, I was looking after a few kids that were doing homework and when walking around I hear a conversation of two kids.…
I have volunteered multiple times for Meals of the Heartland. Last year as a part of a goal my youth group raised money to build water wells in Africa. I created t shirts to sell and hosted a bonfire, both in an effort to raise money. I am currently preparing to go on a missions trip to Haiti this summer with my youth group. My experiences and passion that I have gained during my High School years will carry on through my career and continue to make a difference in our world.…
I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…
I have worked with many families in the past, and I believe I have applied some of the humility, compassion and positivity that the textbook talks about. I believe that the knowledge that is gained through textbooks and by attending classes is important as well as the skills that are gained through practice when working with families. In my personal experience, I come from a very poor family, which allows me to be humble with those families who are in need. I have experienced the separation of parents, the absence of basic needs, like clothing or food, and I have also experienced the anxiety of being undocumented. I think that as I gain the knowledge and skills, I will be able to integrate it with my personal experiences and I will be able…
Our morning at feed my starving children was pretty overwhelming at first. There was a large group of volunteers. I have volunteered at feed my starving children several times, but this was the largest group I have ever been in. At the beginning of the session they explain the packing process and the different types of meals that they send. We had the unique opportunity to pack the Potato-W which is made for…
This summer I did my internship at Miller Children’s Hospital. I had a great experience where I was able to apply my knowledge and skills. This fall I am back at Miller and I am ready to learn more and get the hands on practice I need to be successful in my career. Some of my fears are approaching new people and even though it seems very repetitive of meeting new people I think it’s difficult sometimes building rapport. Sometime I am just scared of not being able to build the connection with my clients.…
The end of August 2005 is a period of time that many along the entire Gulf Coast area will never forget. Hurricane Katrina, even ten years later, is one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in United States history. Despite the awareness and preparation that is afforded when anticipating a hurricane, the Gulf Coast was severely devastated when the storm made landfall on August 29, 2005. Although there was widespread destruction, the region most decimated by the hurricane was New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina not only left the entire city underwater, it left thousands of people homeless, displaced, or dead.…
The Trip to the Grocery Store I haven’t seen him in weeks or maybe even months, I thought as I glared across the small distance between where I was standing and my dad’s car. With my One Direction CD clutched in my hands, I started to close the distance by walking towards his car. I opened the door and slipped in, and then he started to drive to the grocery store. At the time I was under the illusion that my dad would be even slightly happy to see me, but no.…
How I got to view the world through the eyes of others through my volunteer experiences. When you get to do that and learn something new but other ways to help you are truly outstanding. There are so many things that first attracted me to volunteering. Of course, it was advertised in a way to volunteer for yourself to gain experience however I was attracted by how a little can mean the world to someone else. I help others to simple help, not to gain as advertised.…
