Personal Narrative: My Varsity Soccer Team

Decent Essays
Sweat, hard work, adrenaline. These are all things I felt in a special “moment in time” that I shared with my varsity soccer team. The team consists of many different players but the to name a couple: undefeated in the league and only lost one game so far. Our next game is against our rivals, Port Alleghany. This is where the story begins. I arrive at the field ready to go, with music blasting in my ears and my white kit already on. In the locker room my team is pumped. I quickly get out on the field and start practicing my passes and my shots. The game comes and starts faster than I expected. Ten minutes in and I get sent on the field. I remember coming out just before half time and my seeing the crowd, ecstatic, cheering for the team.

It was a warm, sunny day on September 28th. Today we, Laurel High School’s soccer team, were playing against one of our biggest rivals Northwestern. Last year in our regular season, we tied against them 2-2 and lost to them in the playoffs by penalties. This year we didn’t want to lose and we were determined on winning. We arrive at their home field which was the Old Fairmont Heights High School’s soccer field since Northwestern’s field was getting turf instead of grass.…

We began to train even harder, disregarding the swelling on our knees and ankles, tasting the conviction and persistence in the training court shared by all. Meanwhile, I watched professional soccer games, read coaching books every night and observed the training of our rival team, and tried to think of a good strategy. My research drove me to play a direct counter attack style to win the games. In the final team meeting before the big game, I presented my strategy, and convinced them that every individual’s potential is indeed unlimited, especially when they focus on their goal and work together. If the whole team believed in each other and fight to the end, we could change a failure to a victory.…

That fear keeps coming back. Before the commencement of the school year, I had gotten myself on the JV Soccer team. I was delighted, we had been winning games and I had been playing seventy-five minutes a game as a starter. School had just commenced and we were still dominating other teams, except Marquette. They had killed us a couple days before school in a one to five loss, But after the first week of school, we had another shot at them in the Arrowhead tournament.…

“Alright Linds, just remember-- since you’re the captain, it’s your job to be in charge of ordering warm ups,” my coach warned me. That one little sentence made me cringe. I was now in charge of selecting the warmups, gaining consensus, collecting money, and purchasing them for the Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team. A couple of days after I was delegated to be in charge of warm-up duty, I realized I should just accept the responsibility and stop putting it off any longer.…

During the Tournament I was defence with another partner. I definitely tried but I don’t think I did the best. I understand I need more practice to improve my skills on playing defense in soccer. My team in overall was great, I can tell they have a passion for soccer by how well they were playing and by seeing them play every school break. I give myself a B, I give myself this grade because I did accept this challenge and I did try…

I was playing lacrosse on a warm spring day in Glen Ellyn. I could feel my adrenaline spike, accompanied by my heart beating out of my chest. We finally had the ball on our side. The first place team that happened to be our school’s arch nemesis, had selfishly kept the ball to themselves so far. Every second we had possession was precious as we knew the opportunities to score would be few.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

Me and my friend Taylor jumped out of the car and sprinted on to the soccer field. We dropped our bags with the rest of them and Taylor ran off to get started with the team. I stayed and took off my sweats that I wear over my shorts to stay warm. I turned around and my eyes caught a glimpse of a person who I know from school walking onto the field. I started biting my nails and I turned the other direction.…

The roar of the engine sends my heart racing as I pull out on to the track, one lap around and we are off, trucks at my side as we glide around the turns. The slick dirt pulling my back end around I move my hands, my automatic controls, the only thing keeping me from spinning out. It’s funny really because clichés aren’t my thing, however, at times idioms are just the thing to describe a situation or time period in one’s life, for instance the saying that “life is a roller coaster” couldn’t be more fitting for my life. The ups and downs, the highs and the lows, the twists and turns, life is just one big adrenaline rush and at times I feel I’m a junking, addicted to life.…
