Personal Narrative: Physical Therapy Assistant

Decent Essays
Walking into the TOC that early morning on July 25, I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect. As I reached forward to introduce myself to Mr. Jeff Keith, the gentleman that gave me this opportunity, an air of relief swept over me. Mr. Keith is a physical therapist assistant at the Huntsville TOC who has been practicing for twenty three years with a business degree to help him in being the assistant manager of the TOC in Huntsville. I was so excited to begin my full day of learning and it all started with my fervent inquiries about his journey as a PTA, including the good and the bad. Mr. Keith was kind enough to allow me into his personal opinions. He believes that the best part about working as a PTA is the aspect of human interaction and hearing patients life stories, but the …show more content…
I am intrigued by observing all ages, because seeing the progression and digression of the human body will be a key factor in how to treat patients when I become a PTA. The most interesting part of this day was learning about trigger point dry needling, also known as intramuscular manual therapy, from the director of physical therapy at TOC, Mr. John Williams. Also, I enjoyed Mr. Keith explaining things like isometric and isotonic muscle contractions. When a young male disclosed his story of hyper extending his knee in a soccer game, I was eager to see the Isokinetic machine aid in his quad strengthening with eccentric loading. The most valuable thing I learned from this job shadowing experience was that patients are not only coming in for physical therapy. Along with the physical assistance, patients are looking forward to the emotional support given by the DPT or LPTA. This being said, I truly believe that becoming a PTA is the right path for me. Originally, I wanted to become a psychiatrist, so working with the physical body and slightly with the psych will aid in my goal to treat people in a holistic

PT 826 Reading Assignment The information given in the article by Lau, Chiu, & Lam (2010) about using thoracic manipulation for the treatment of neck pain was very new to me. There were several instances in the past where I treated patients with neck pain by giving mobilizations techniques and modalities in and around cervical area. This article was a convincing one which helped me to understand the concept of biomechanical and etiological relationship between cervical and thoracic structures and how this knowledge can be capitalized by effectively using thoracic mobilization in patients suffering from chronic mechanical neck pain.…

I noticed that the patients understand the importance of early mobilization and sometimes, because they are so eager to try and walk, I have to tell them that they still need to wait for the Physiotherapist to assess them before mobilizing. Every day was a learning experience for me. At first, I always get supervised by my mentor especially during admissions and when new patients come from the theatres, but now, my mentor told me that I have been improving a lot and gaining more confidence on how I handle my patients. Learning about all of these through research, training and meetings with my mentor, I was able to learn about how serious VTE is and its consequences. The things that I have learned about VTE is very useful and I realized that I can also apply the things that I have learned in my everyday…

    APA Vision Summary

    • 3 Pages

Part of the vision is the concept of physical therapists moving more into the community which is also part of social responsibility as one of APTA’s core values (APTA, 2012). To build on this vision, physical therapists need to move past looking at the shoulder or knee injury from the traditional medical model of treating a patient, and more toward how it is impacting their daily movement and functioning at home, school, work or recreation (Hayhurst, 2014). The physical therapists in the school system have already moved away from this medical model given the environment in which we work. However, the school staff relies on therapists for medical and clinical expertise. The only interaction with physicians is to sign a plan of care if the individual therapist is billing Medicaid for a student’s therapy services which are carried out through a fax…

I shadowed an orthopedic physician assistant and learned about what they do on a daily basis. While there I got to see the role that he plays in a patients care and how him and the surgeon work together as a team. I saw his perform pre and post surgical visits, aspirations and injections, interpret radiology reports, and evaluate and treat injuries. I also had the opportunity to spend about 20 hours in the operating room in which I watched both the surgeon and physician assistant perform a variety of surgeries such as total knee and hip arthroscopy’s, ACL reconstructions, knee scopes, etc.…

I entered this class knowing that my performance and understanding of the information relied heavily on my entrance into the PTA program. Becoming a PTA is so important to me that it kept me driven to have a complete understanding of the material, even when it was most difficult.…

Amy and I began our long drive back home from our tour of the University of Virginia after spending every waking second of February break examining every nook and cranny of the school. Amy turned on the radio in order to distract us from the thought of having to drive 32 hours back to Arizona in the middle of winter storm Zander. The car began to swerve over the ice slicked roads as we merged onto Route 66, yet Amy did not seem to notice this slight drift. I leaned my head against the window to get a glance at the scenery around us when the screech of tires sounded next to our car. I looked up to see our car glide towards a black midnight Chevrolet pick-up truck at 69 mph.…
