Personal Narrative: Running Cross Country

We all have something to be passionate about. Whether it's a sport, a career or a hobby, everyone has that something that they do and love that is deeply woven into our lives. This "thing" is so important that taking this one "thing" away would tear any person apart. My passion, my hunger, my "thing" is running cross country. There has never been a moment wasted on my sport due to its inherent ability to build a person's character and teach the athletes the importance of goal setting. During my freshman year, I ambitiously said my goal was to run at the state meet rather than cheering on the sidelines. Even with all of the miles, hours and sweat that I've put into achieving my goal, I lost the battle to get a varsity spot and will be cheering on the …show more content…
On a team that has been nationally ranked in the Top 25 all season, the competition has never been better. I’ve always wanted to contribute to the team as much as possible and until this fall, that meant getting faster so I could earn one of the top spots. When I recognized that I wouldn’t be winning one of those spots, I wondered, “What can I do now?” It didn't take me very long to figure out that there are many more ways for me to lead and contribute than simply being fast. I've found that I can express many different kinds of leadership, depending on what the situation requires. I can be the vocal leader and keep my younger teammates in line or lead our team in prayers before races. If someone has a poor race, I can be the one who takes them aside and tells them it's not the end of the world and show them how they can learn from the experience. When needed, I can step back and allow someone else to take charge, while I silently lead by doing what is expected of me without complaining. This difference in mindset is something I will be able to carry into a countless number of situations in my
