Personal Narrative: Sophomore Year Of High School

Improved Essays
Sophomore year of high school, I began planning my future. It was a bit early, but one can never be too prepared. My family was invested in me following the traditional path of receiving a state university degree and then settling down to a stable and unexciting career. Since they offered to help finance this future, I put aside my dreams of traveling the world and tried to figure out an approach to satisfy both my parents' plans and my dreams. Quite a few panic attacks and bouts of existentialism later, I realized that I could not shrink my dreams to fit into the box that I was told they were supposed to go.

Coming down the stairs and facing my close minded parents to tell them of the University of Glasgow ended as expected. My father had left after screaming about how stupid I am and that if I pursued this school, I should never expect any help from them ever again. My mother quietly agreed with my father and said, after he left, that they would not help with loans or financial aid. This, if anything, caused me to fight for this school even more.

I would like to attend the University of Glasgow because this school can do the most for me. Instead of eventually traveling to a few places later on in life, I can start now and receive the skills I need to be successful while I'm at it. My love for adventure and risk taking started as a

The year was 2014. I was a senior in high school, already I had committed to go to Colorado Mesa University, I had a track scholarship and I was going to major in Geology, ultimately wanting to go into petroleum engineering. The only thing was, I didn’t want to. I did not want to go be a geologist, I wanted to travel, to see the world! As cliché as it may have been, I dropped out, I worked for a period of time and sent myself on a trip to Europe to “find myself”.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

In any cliché personal development story, an even more cliché hook is used and then attempted to turn into a universal piece of advice, like “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” In actuality, the most important thing I learned during my experience as a Westlake Magnet student was that often, you will have no idea where you are going, and that is perfectly fine. We are taught from a young age to develop a clear-cut idea of what we aspire to do in the future, or another person’s hopes for our futures are forced upon us. However, my experiences at Westlake have shown me that it is more important to learn about yourself and your identity than to force yourself to fit into a future other people have envisioned for you. Pushing…

Life in my house was at times an adventure and at other times a misadventure. Deep in the throes of a misadventure and while pregnant with my youngest brother Zach, my mother was unwittingly poisoned. Unfortunately, Zach was born with several physical and intellectual disabilities causing severe obstacles in school. I was giving the opportunity to play teacher in real life and tutor him. It made such a positive impact on both of our lives, I knew I had found my calling.…

My freshman year of college I struggled greatly with the cost of college. I had moved out of my mother’s house and was living with my grandmother. I worked a part time job of 15 hours while taking 19 hours of school. Because I did not have my own place I was still considered under my mother’s income. My mother does not make very much money.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

Life with Education As I sit and reflect on “First Job” by Iliana Roman and how her life could possibly compare to mine, the term “apples and oranges” come to mind. Even while I admire Iliana Roman’s “never give up” attitude and the fact she proved that a woman does not need a man to be successful in life, I don’t believe I’m going to find a multitude of points to hit upon. While the author’s first job of many lasted a period of years, my one and only job lasted a little over a year. It started at the beginning of my senior year and lasted through graduation.…

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

Life's a journey worth taking the unbeaten path. That is why, despite looking up to my loving parents and having the utmost respect for them, I have taken a different road than they did. However, undergoing any challenge without their guiding experience can certainly prove to be an undertaking. I, a first generation college student, am the pioneer of higher education for my family. Though I join many others in lunging out into the world for the first time, I am doing so without having a father or mother to tell me how to tackle the college experience.…

I always shared my thoughts and notions with close family and friends, however sometimes they weren’t as enthusiastic as I was about my own idea. There were times I was fightened, let down and even discouraged, but that never once misled me to the path Ive paved on my own. While, I was living in Georgia, not going very far an opputunity came for me to move back to Florida. Without hesitation I took the offer, so I could better educate myself at Florida SouthWestern State College.…

As we are growing up we tend to develop a life plan, in other words we set goals to reach at a certain age. In my case my life plan did not work as I imagined it, however, is never too late to redesigned and start again. I am 30 years old and just last semester decided to finish what I started 11 years ago. My original plan was to become a Pediatrician and establish a non-profit organization that provides Education and Medical Services to children in rural areas around the world. The future is never clear, and my own was no exception. Thoughts of what I wanted to do with my life were always followed by uncertainty. During the entirety of my adolescence I always felt overwhelmed by my inability to decide my future, leading to a metastasizing panic in my inabilities to achieve success in any discipline. My transition from childhood fantasies to adult goals was anything but seamless and I often found myself lost, especially in academics.…

Future. That’s probably one of the scariest words I know. The future is unpredictable, it’s often wrapped in wrapping paper, ready to be opened and it can both be exciting and disappointing. While I was in Elementary, I dreamed of being a chef, a cop, a fashion designer, a softball player, a singer, and an actor. As soon as I was in middle school, I wanted to be one thing, a singer, I had decided that I liked singing enough for it to be a career, although my vocal range disagreed.…
