Personal Narrative: Traveling Via The Subway

This is a Manhattan-bound B express train. The next stop is Sheepshead Bay” The words rang in my head and echoed around the platform as the people around me sprung to life and entered the train. Throughout elementary school and middle school, I walked to and from school with my mother alongside me– supporting me and shielding me from the surrounding world. It was a simple ritual: we would walk to school together and when school was over, she would be waiting for me in the exact spot I had left …show more content…
For the first couple weeks of school, I continued to keep my head down while riding the train; however, as time passed, I started to adapt to my surroundings. In the beginning of the school year I was often late to class because I had missed the 7:00 AM train to school. Since my former school was a five minute stroll away from my house, I was not accustomed to setting an alarm or to following a set routine in the morning. To adjust to the different circumstances that I was faced with, I set my alarm back 20 minutes and ran to the train station daily. In the winter, I would have to walk home from the train station after sunset, yet my inexperience traveling alone in the dark left me fearful of the dangers that may have been lurking around me. To alleviate my anxiety, I would walk home slowly, remaining vigilant of my surroundings and eventually my fear vanished. Occasionally, I would be tasked with traveling to Manhattan to visit museums for school projects. Although the city seemed to be a massive labyrinth for a young Brooklyn native such as myself, I used my phone’s GPS and the maps in the trains to find my way

As one steps onto the platform, they will likely notice the imbalance, with the majority of passengers grouped at the ends of the station. After about two minutes of waiting, the entire platform begins to look up, as they have noticed the familiar feeling that all regular commuters know and love: the feeling of the train pushing air into the station, which is a sign that transportation for all is near. It was like any other school day, coming back from lunch, sitting in class, and talking to friends; however, it all changed once I arrived in my American Studies class. Mrs. Forbs was standing in front of the class waiting for everyone to quiet down. The class was a bunch of sixth graders, so it took a while to make us be silent. The day felt weird for me, I had my same robotic schedule but for some reason something didn’t feel right. I thought it had something to do with the food I ate for lunch, I would be prepared to head down to the bathroom or even nurse if that was the case; however, what happened that day no sixth grader would be able to prepare for.…

After that my brother, sister, and I were guided to the couches that were located in the lobby, while my parents spent about twenty agonising minutes checking us in. After the long flight I just wanted to lay down and rest, but my dad thought it would be a wonderful idea to go out into the city and explore some of the many different places. Groaning and dragging my feet along with shoulders hunched forward I followed my eager parents into a place that I had never been before. The hustle and bustle of the day was all around me, and the amount of people who were walking throughout the streets and the sidewalk was astounding.
