Personal Narrative: Why I Become A Math Major

Improved Essays
When this department denied my application in the fall, I thought carefully about why I craved becoming a math major. Last time I applied I was becoming a math major because I loved mathematics, but I had no idea what I wanted to do with that love once I graduated. I wrote about the teacher who almost ruined my chances of being a successful student, and how vigorously I fought to get to where I am today. When the email came informing me of my denial, my heart sank. I had expected to be sad but I did not expect to be heartbroken because at that time I really had no idea what I wanted to do. However, that feeling made me realize that I loved mathematics because it had always acted as a map for me. Even as a kid whenever I figured out a math problem

What confirmed it was the fact that I was the only freshman in the class. I felt discouraged because I believed that I wasn’t smart enough and I was more discouraged when I failed that year and was doomed to take the class again, much like how most of the students in “Student Fear Factor” felt. Sitting in a hard plastic chair in my math class I felt paralyzed. The heat in the room was unimaginable on the cool autumn day. I could not be the only one that was feeling it. At the same time I could barely keep head straight as the math test stared back at me with harsh eyes telling me “you will never be able to pass this class,” in a slithering tone. A drop of sweat rolled down the side of my face.…

I was assigned to work together with Lisa Adamson and Katie Doherty. My group and I were in charge to teach chapter eight sections four and five. Chapter eight section four was about functions, and chapter eight section five is about coordinate system. Surprisingly, our group previously taught a lesson of a fifth grade math class, and our sections tied into teaching up to the middle and high school level. I enjoyed these sections and I will discuss how I felt working as my group and how I individually performed.…

I almost had a heart attack when I received my math test with a big fat red F on top of it. It was the third F I've gotten alone in just math class. I was good in the other subjects such as, physical education, science, and reading. The only thing that I had trouble with was math, I hated math and I didn't understand a single thing that was happening when she taught a certain subject. I was going to have to do summer school if I didn’t get my grade up, and I already had my vacation planned out.…

My decision to return to college was purely random. There was no pondering over the decision; no weighing in the pros and cons, no thinking it through or any real thought behind it. I literally woke up one morning and said to myself “I think I’ll go back to college” and I made the call. I called the College of New Rochelle and made the appointment for the admissions test. And before I knew what was actually happening, I was a matriculated college student.…

In my mind, I felt that I was not good enough, yet I still tried my best. There were times I gave up, but when I passed that class with a B, I was thrilled.…

As a kid, I was always considered smart. The very fact that my family and teachers always mentioned that I 'm intelligent made me work harder and try to explore a little beyond others. Science, in general, was always my primary interest. In the vast world of science, it is easy to build an interest in any of its branches. At that age, around 9-10, instead of being super interested in cartoons and animations, I was interested in science fiction movies, especially Hacker related.…

“Come on, get out of the car. It's not a big deal. You need to get to school,” Those were words that I commonly heard the second half of my freshman year of high school. Of course most high school age kids don’t want to go to school, but it's for trivial reasons like the fact the work is boring. I didn’t want to go to school for a much more complicated reason; anxiety rushed through my body any time I even thought about getting close to the school building.…
