Most would think that I should have been confident because in middle school I was in the AIG program. However, I never truly felt satisfied with myself. I always got good grades, but I never felt like I earned good grades. Although I was making straight As and Bs, it was always relatively easy to earn those marks in middle school. I never encountered any challenging work in school. However, the course load at WECHS was much more rigorous and challenging. All of the classes were AP and Honors level, so I had to take harder classes, in half the time in comparison to other high school students. The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

Growing up, I was an immensely shy child. In my pre-teen years, I often had trouble with confrontation. This led to people taking advantage of my meek demeanor and I was frequently the target of bullying despite my consistent efforts to be as likeable as possible.
