High school has been a wild ride. I’ve changed in many ways. I’ve lost friends and gained friends and lost friends. I’ve cried myself to sleep and laughed till I cried. My life isn’t hard though, I’m a white privileged white girl that lives in a suburban area with parents that would buy the world for me. But for once I want something to be about me.
Let’s start from the beginning, ninth grade to be exact. Oh god thinking about ninth grade makes me laugh and cringe. That year I thought the whole world was against me. My grades however were great. I had a C in math and couldn’t be more proud. While other students were failing and talking of retaking classes next year, I was working hard. I wanted my first year of high school to start off well. I was so naïve back then. I

This year has been wonderful. There are so many things that happened in just a few months and there are still more memories to make. My last homecoming was fantastic. I got to spend it with people I could tolerate. I didn’t spend it with my best friend because it was her birthday that day and she wanted to spend it with her boyfriend. To be honest I can’t stand tori and her cousin, Bianca. But they’re Serbian and they know everyone, so it’s good to have those types of people around. We stayed at homecoming for an hour again before heading back to tori’s house. When we got to her house, we had pizza and watched a scary movie, it was so funny. We just made fun of the people in the movie the whole time. Then in November I went to a Serbian concert with tori and I was so much fun. Going to concerts with friends and really amazing, I see now what I was missing. It’s good to have Serbian friends because they know everyone and that’s how you get good gossip. That’s it for my adventures of senior year so

The summer was a huge success athletics wise, my team was looking strong and capable of doing something big in the upcoming season. Starting high school is an overwhelming feeling as it’s the last four years of schooling where it was time to look at my strengths and weaknesses in order not to fail. I never really thought that hanging out with friends would change my focus on school. Although I had every intention to pass all my classes, peer pressure got to me to where school wasn’t important anymore. I wasn’t an A straight student nor was I good at sports, but I never intended to fail any courses. Even though I didn’t pass all my classes, it was the fact that when I failed them, it was my parent’s disappointment where I truly felt like a failure.…

As I walked through the front doors of Allentown Central Catholic High School, I felt a sudden rush of panic. Everything I had once seen and had once been familiar with in middle school quickly vanished into thin air. I was terrified, not because I thought I was going to get lost, but because I knew that every little quiz I took, every little paper I wrote, and every exam I labored over would now count toward my ultimate goal of getting into a prestigious university. I wasn’t scared of new faces, but rather new beginnings and experiences.…

At 38 degrees latitude north and 92 longitude west, lies the rural farming town of California, Missouri. This town is rich in cornfields, small businesses, and many churches of all denominations. From the quiet fields, to the busy town square this city is home to 4,341 people. What I believe makes California stand out from the other towns is that it has the “oldest continuously operating fair west of the Mississippi” (Kunze). But the thing that impacts me most about this town is the California High School, it’s staff, and the students.…

The memory still lingers in my mind of when I walked into the enormous unfamiliar halls of my new high school for the first time. So many useless things had been said by everyone with regards to Freshman year, most of which were what seemed like cliche over exaggerated horror stories. Typical upperclassmen pranks played out on the incoming freshmen. As bogus as it may sound, I have been so gullible that I believed every word of every story anybody would tell me. It was to be expected that I would go into my first day of “official school”, anticipating complete torment.…

Walking through those doors on the first day of school was remarkably thrilling; little did I know that my life was about to change forever. Most of us want to be going downstream, to be caught in the tide of schooling and schedules and let it carry us to our next destination in life. I’m the same way. Why strive to forge your own path or struggle with new, uncharted territory when a clear path, a proven path, is right in front of your own eyes, waiting for you? During middle school, this was the prevailing philosophy; just ride the current. It wasn’t long until I realized a strategy of letting the river of others’ efforts carry me would not work, however.…
