Personal Statement: Why Am I Volunteer

Improved Essays
People volunteer for many different reasons; it could be because they are required to volunteer, to gain new experiences, or to explore career options. I volunteer because I love making connections with other people, and helping others. Volunteering gives me a sense of accomplishment and allows me to know that I have done well for others. This past summer I had the privilege of volunteering at the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference, as well as Brookdale Assisted Living in Manassas. Volunteering at these places taught me many important life lessons, allowed me to make connections with other people, and allowed myself to grow as an individual.

I learned that it takes a lot of preparation to plan for the upcoming school year, especially when teachers are entering a new school or their first year of teaching. I had never realized how much work and preparation teachers actually put in before they start school. Many of the teachers who attended the conference teach more than one specific class, and they expressed to me that it can sometimes be challenging trying to switch back and forth from one curriculum to another in one day. While talking to some of the teachers it came to my attention that many teachers who teach Family and Consumer Sciences courses do not always have FCCLA chapters, whether it is because they do not have the time, or that their school division does not allow it. It was very surprising to me that they did not have FCCLA chapters and that it was something that is not required. I learned from the keynote speakers that spoke at the sessions that it is not easy to run a classroom in today’s world. With the advancements in technology, teachers are losing control over their students and it is sometimes difficult to balance out the classroom. The lesson it taught me was to not take my teachers for granted; they try their best and are there to help us not punish us by taking our phones away or giving us tests/quizzes. This conference opened my eyes to a career choice that I would someday like to be apart of, and I absorbed a lot of information and advice from

Raised in a Buddhist household, my parents have instilled in me the core value of putting the concerns of others before mine. With this, I have felt that it has always been my responsibility to take care of others. Through primary school and middle school, I quickly took the role of being an outlet for my friends, classmates, and teachers whenever they needed help or someone to talk to; listening to their problems, staying after school to help my teachers for any minor help that they needed in the classrooms, and having an overall open mind to any situation. My passion to help others continued on to high school, where I was introduced to volunteering opportunities in my neighboring communities. My first experience in helping the greater community…

Volunteering has made me realize that this really is an important and urgent question you should ask yourself, because volunteering is good for you as well as those that you assist. For instance, it was an extraordinarily good feeling for me to volunteer at the Unionville Community Bike Drive. Over a series of months we collect, clean, repair, deliver, and then distribute around 100 bikes to those in need in the community. Being part of a diverse team of people whose main goal is to have a positive impact on the community was energizing. Watching the look of happiness and relief on hundreds of people in need was priceless.…

The first two years of high school I volunteered at my old eighth grade school during volleyball season. Here, I would help the couch train the girls and help during games and tourmates. Two days of Halloween I would help at a little festival with children. In junior year, I grew very interested in helping the elderly, so I began looking for openings and began volunteering. However, I didn’t work there for long.…

One of the activities I do that is substantial to me is volunteering as a Kettle Host during Winter for the Salvation Army. Through Christmas Kettles, I collect donations from the society to help give back to the less fortunate in our community. What volunteering for the Salvation Army has taught me is that even the smallest effort can make a tremendous impact. When I first started off as a volunteer, I did not feel motivated enough to believe what I was doing would truly have an impact. I had this mindset which led me to believe that the happenings in our community did not concern me, although, I began to have a change of opinion as I kept volunteering.…
