So now you start getting mad and you deny that it was your fault and blame the teachers because why do they always want us to write about our lives. After you had your mini tantrum, you just go full throttle on finally getting started on your essay. But the very moment you start, everything in your mind is all jumbled up together because, for one, you have so many things going on in your head and two, you still don’t know if you should just write the truth or make up random things. You could just write down a whole bunch of made up stuff and get a decent grade on something you knew you could’ve aced and then you ask yourself why you're not the best writer or why teachers decide to ask you to write about your life. Instead, you finally decide it’s time to just write about everything, so you do. You write about how people have turned on you even though you were there for them in their worse times. You write about people who you once thought you’d always be friends with someone. You write about all the girls that broke your heart and wasted your time, how they hurt you, how you always missed them because you thought they were the most important things in you life. You write about the family that has died and you weren’t even there to see them one last time and tell them that you loved them and left so many people in this world. You write about all your downfalls, mistakes, and bad things that have happened to you. But then, you also write about your ups, your high points, amazing things in your life, how you’ve grown and overcame challenges. You write about the amazing people in your life that have completely changed your life and been through it all with you, friends and family. You write about the amazing life-changing experiences you’ve had and how even though

During my junior year at Stephen Decatur High School, I was enrolled in American Literature with Mrs. Moore. At first I thought she was a hard teacher because she made us write a lot. I enjoyed writing creative pieces, but in her class she gave us a prompt or we had to analyze a text and prove how the author believed in the American Dream or not. The first essay we wrote I scored a 29 out of 30 and was proud of myself because English has not always been my strongest subject. Our next assignment was on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

I walked into the classroom of my last class of the day expecting to just take notes and listen to a lecture. Unfortunately for me, the teacher announced that we were going to write a timed essay based on a chapter of a book we were reading. This task did not seem challenging at first, and the thirty minutes we were given to write our essays seemed like plenty of time. Nonetheless, I still managed to turn what was supposed to…

Assignment after assignment would pile up in my homework folder till the night before they were due. As the teacher would hand out the sheet, I wouldn’t even look at it I’d just put it right into my folder, hoping it was a joke that I didn’t actually have to write. Writing has always been a struggle to me. Creating ideas, brainstorming has never come easy. I could never connect with my writing, forced to put words on the paper about a topic I had no interest in.…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…

Throughout my first semester of college level English, there were various pieces of writing that I had to develop. A large range of them were opinionated, which is something I am not used to. In high school, teachers would tell the students exactly what type of essay to write and how to write it. High school papers were extremely concise in a way that a student was not allowed to think too far out of the box; ideas were stifled. This semester I was able to write essays on topics that I could relate to.…

Looking out the window, I see the last few rays of sunlight that glare through the swaying pine trees. The light, although painful to look at, is dazzling. While the sun falls lower into the horizon, I look down to my computer screen. “Last edit made 1 hour ago,” it reads at the top of the screen, and the document is completely blank. I’ve been dreading writing this essay, the first real essay I’m writing in High School, and I’m treating it like every other writing assignment.…

Notably, as a teenager I wrote a horrible academic essay in an easy English class in the 10th grade, and received a D. By way of contrast, as an adult I wrote an excellent research essay in an English class as a freshman in college, and received an A. Though, I made horrible mistakes on my personal essay as a teenager, I believe my writing has improved tremendously due to a research essay I wrote. For one thing, as a teenager in the 10th grade I wrote a horrible essay that received a non-passing grade, but now as an adult in college I proved I could write an excellent academic paper because I received an A on an essay that I wrote my freshman year of college. As a matter of fact, my teenage years were full of many horrible writing memories that I will never forget. Specifically, my worst writing memory as a teenager was when I did horrible in my 10th grade writing class. More importantly, this was when I wrote an essay based off my personal opinion, and received a D for my own personal opinion.…

I believe we have all had that one moment when we prayed to God that, “If you get me through this Lord, I will never do it again. I promise.” Now in my life I’ve had a lot of those “Oh crap” moments, but the one that sticks out the most is the one back when I just turned fifteen and got into my first wreck. Since that fateful day I have been in a lot more wrecks.…

I am writing this letter to inform you of my previous writing samples from quarter one of my junior year at Saint John’s High School. In this first quarter, I have written a total of eight essays, four occasional papers and four in-class essays. Of these eight essays, I am most proud of is my third occasional paper. This paper was about the clowns in Massachusetts terrorizing children and young adults for no reason. This paper was not only my best one that I wrote, but, also my favorite one to write.…

In the past, every time I had a writing assignment, I was unhappy. Due to my insecurity, and inability to express ideas on paper, I had to work doubly hard as other students. I spent hours writing and editing to ensure I have the appropriate content, organization, and grammar. Since English is a second language, I was concerned that I would not do well at the university. However, the class in College Writing helped improved my writing skills.…

My adventure started on a balmy, early-August day, about six years ago. My family and me were vacationing in San Antonio, Texas for a little over a week as a part of a family reunion. My dad’s from a big family and they are spread out all over the country from the east coast to the west coast. Every even numbered year we get together for a long weekend. We’ve had them in Savannah, Ga,, Hartford, CT., and we even hosted one in Detroit when I was too young to remember.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

I remember in fourth grade my teacher insisted that we come to school the following day dressed as we would in our dream career. In that moment, I realized how I enjoyed creating new ideas and designing fashion. I then reminisced on the day I got my first Barbie. I use to mix and match her clothing with previous dolls I owned. I wanted all my Barbies to look original, unlike most little girls who bought their matching clothes in a plastic pack.…
